Look at how deep our bench is becoming.
With the past few drafts and free agent signings, we have a bench that has the chance to be the deepest in the league.
Marcus Banks Tony Allen Ricky Davis Justin Reed Ryan Gomes Brian Scalabrini **Will Bynum **Taylor Coppenwrath
This is assuming that the future starting rotation is Perkins, Jefferson, Green, Pierce, Delonte
Granted, not all of the players on the team will be here in a couple of years. I don't envision Raef or Blount to be around much longer. And Pierce could one day be pushed out of Boston because of Gerald Green. But in any event, our future team could have 3 - 4 guys on the bench who would be starters for other teams.
And we still have a bunch of 1st round picks coming up in future drafts.

Ainge has done a good job of accumulating talented players in their 20s at various positions, with the Cleveland and LA picks yet to come (and Golden State's 2nd round pick as well). No one will get every draft pick right, but with the sheer volume of opportunities Ainge has given himself, we are well on our way to being a very deep and talented team. After years of blown drafts (Moiso, Kendrick Brown/Forte/J. Johnson being given away) it is nice to see someone who knows how to start building a team.

The only hold overs from the team Ainge inherited in '03 are Blount and Pierce (Walker is likely gone--again). Every single player aside from them 2 are all guys Ainge hand picked himself. Not every draft will bring a team a starter, let alone a star player. But Ainge has provide us both with his drafts. He's given us potential star players (Jefferson and Green), starting potential players (Perkins, Delonte, Tony Allen), and bench depth (Banks, Reed, and Gomes). And he has yet to bring in an impact free agent (the final part of his 3 D's to building a team--Draft, Develop, Deals).

i hope we'll get the impact free agent soon because we really need one good center or even more likely - the pg I bet Ainge will wait and see what we have after watching some summer league games. As he said in on of the article you posted - he doesn't like others knowing his business. So we won't, for the most part.

actually, I don't think DA had to tell us that. I think we had figured that out.

Clearly Scalabrine is going to be the future of this team. Finally someone I hate more than Raef. I always laughed at the fact that he was actually in the NBA- a sideshow, a clown of some sort- and now he's on OUR team...for 5 years!!!
See the reason I hated Raef so much was because of how much money he made, not totally because of him. The reason I hate 'rine is because he is totally totally annoying...
As for our future team, it really is looking up, but what a mistake in losing Toine!

DA wants a team 1-14... Not a one man wrecking crew. The only 'W' worse than AW is sitting in office. They both need to go.

Now that DA has signed him, I bet he can swap him for Sundov ifyou like.

Theorectically, we can still sign Walker, as he is our own free agent and we own his Bird rights, which means we don't need the MLE to re-sign him. I personally don't think he is coming back as he wants a long term contract at more than the MLE/$5 million dollar level, and Ainge and Doc I'm sure feel Jefferson is the long term answer at power forward. But if Walker goes elsewhere, it won't be because of the Scalabrini signing.

Yeah, I just don't see Ainge giving Walker the length, or the financial terms, he's seeking for in his next contract. And also, I think the ill feelings Ainge had toward Walker's game, which led to him trading Walker a couple of years ago, are still in his heart.
Justin Reed seems to have improved his overall game this summer. He's more of a factor offensively, and he's said to have been working hard on his shooting. He's already one of the best defenders we have on the team (Perkins and Jefferson claim he locks down Pierce regularly in practice--and he's one of the few guys, in their opinions, who can shut Kobe down). But now, with adding some offense, he has a chance to bolster our bench to even higher heights.
Way early to think about this, but I guess its possible for him to work his way into the starting lineup. He can serve a role similar to Bruce Bowen's.

even more of a reason not to sign Scalabrine- to let our younger players develop- Reed, Gomes, Jefferson, Perk, even Green will lose time to this dope and A. Davis. I have seen this guy play plenty, and he is basically a poor mans version of Matt Bonner...that's right, I said MATT BONNER- just because you give it your all does not mean you should get a 5 yr contract...and if you remember, his stats were probably INFLATED because he played with Kidd...haha

But you need a guy vet for the time being, and Ainge feels like Scalabrine can be that guy. This is going to be his 5th season in the NBA and he's well accustomed to his role off the bench. Gomes and Reed are probably not ready to take a big role off the bench just yet. Scalabrine allows them to be worked in as they develop.

As I stated in another post, I just thought there were many other options, where our team actually improves. If we have to let Toine go, we have to let him go...and it's sad for me, because I was so happy to see him back. But what about someone like SAR or Swift? I want the team to improve, not have someone on it who is content with being a bench player. No one who plays in the NBA should be totally satisfied with that.

I would be satisfied to make the money he makes and play with the greatest basketball players in the world and contribute to a winning team, and if someone offered me a contract to be a role player I probably wouldn't say "I don't know. I'm not just happy to sit on the bench." Mathmatically not everyone can play 48 mins or be the leader or the star. Scalabrine has a chance to contribute. I didn't love the signing for multiple reasons but that doesn't mean he can't help us or bring anything to the table.
