Thanks to EddieTours for bringing this news/rumor to Celtics Green. He read on Celtics Blog that Saras Jasikevicius has signed a contract worth 4.5 million for three years. Its only being talked about in the papers in Israel (in Hebrew), but a few Israelites are translating it for Celtics Blog and confirming the story. No news yet in the States, but a popular sports radio station in Boston (Russilo?) was hinting about this a few days ago, and apparently, this person is legit.
Could we have struck magic again and landed Europe's most highly regarded player and its reigning MVP?

I hope so... Let's wait for a Celtic press release. Please don't jump-the-gun, it only hurts more.

Saras would be the major steal of the free agent market. Not sure why other teams past on this guy?

teams are prolly scared of his lack of D. Or they dont want to spend their MLE on a guy that has never played on this level.

My question to you FreshN---- Are you going to stick around this summer? Please do!

For that price of 4.5 mil, it sounds really intriguing. Very inexpensive.

Actually, think of the ramifications of the contract. 4.5 million is almost our entire MLE. We are spending the whole loot on just one acquisition. Are we a Jasikevicius away from moving to the next level? Possibly, but I was hoping for more frontcourt help, too. Raef and Blount aren't cutting it. And Jefferson and Perkins are still too young to depend on to take us to the playoffs.
With this bold acquisition (if its true), I think its pointing to a trade to bring in some frontcourt help. There's no way we can bring in a free agent if we sign Saras. The only other way to bring in a player(s) is through a trade(s). With Saras on the team, one of the 3 young PG's is going to have to go. And which young PG isn't on the Celtics Vegas summer league team? The same one who Ainge felt he could part with last summer, only to bring him back because Kupchak got scared and did what he had to to ensure Ainge not returning to LA.

Yeah, I was typing too fast when I posted that ;D
Marcus Banks is the PG who'll be shipped out if Saras signs with us. Shipped out, meaning either to the NBDL or off the team altogether.

I say we keep Marcus for another year, and see what happens. This year is his second year (in my opinion) in the league, and he should develop more. Do you trade him? It depends the deal. If the deal is for like a second round pick, no.

IMO, Banks is out the door, now or next year. He's developing into a solid scorer, but with Ainge's desire to have smart players on the floor, Banks is not developing this part of his game quickly enough. He runs through picks and will have an open player to pass to, but either won't see it, or doesn't have the passing skills to get the player the ball.
If anything, NBDL could be his saving grace. If he is sent there, he could try to work extensively on this.

Do you think Banks would take being moved to the NBDL with a good attitude. He and his father were ticked-off last year when DA made the deal with LA. I believe Banks is all but gone.
Reaf might be the player we cut w/ the CBA option. Not that I don't like him, it's more about his contract and past health problems. Do we trust his knee holds up? Then we could go after Saras and a FA big. Just a thought.

marcus can't go to the NBDL. Also we have to keep some stuff in mind. MLEs don't usually get you more than one decent player. We can still get one thru trade. It took C Billups years to get good so I think it's worth showing MBanks a little more patience. It would KILL me if we shipped out ANOTHER young PG without showing enough patience and he becomes good on another team AGAIN. Try to picture C Billups playing against M Banks in the championship game and how that would feel. It could happen. Also this whole Perkins and Al J is too young stuff. Of course they are. It took Kobe and KG 2-3 years to get really good. You couldn't have given them vets a year early and taken their teams far in the playoffs before they were ready. You have to wait. It took Jordan 3 years before his Bulls did anything in the playoffs. This is a step by step process. Not an escalator.

I wouldn't be surprise if Ainge signs a undrafted free agent to fill the frontcourt. Don't be shocked if nothing happens this summer. Most of the stuff going on is basically rambling through the media. Nothing more than that.

Ainge talks about changing personel this summer, by getting a vet PG and getting better shooters up front (not sure what he means by that. Don't Blount and Raef already stay far away from the basket as it is?).
There's going to be the Chauncy Billups talk all the time when we're looking to move Banks--and its wise to be cautious. But, Billups as a rookie already showed more steady play at the Point than Marcus has after playing in the league for 2 years.
Banks is a 3rd string PG in terms of passing ability. His value is in his speed, his scoring, and his defense.
