Could Mauer be traded?

It would be viewed as an act of treason in the Twin Cities, but could the Twins consider the unthinkable and trade Joe Mauer?
Jim Souhan of the Star Tribune writes Thursday that the Twins might be forced to consider that option at some point if they are unable to reach a deal with the franchise icon who is eligible for free agency after this season.
Souhan says a long-term deal with Mauer is still more likely than not, but at some point the price will get too high. "If (agent Ron) Shapiro is intent on pushing Mauer to $25 million or more a year, Mauer might find himself on the Johan Santana Shuttle out of town," Souhan writes.
A trade of Mauer could yield a quality closer to replace Joe Nathan and keep one player from eating up a quarter of the entire payroll.
ESPN The Magazine's Tim Kurkjian seems skeptical. "Trying to put a trade together of that magnitude would be impossible. They can't let him go," Kurkjian said this morning on Mike & Mike.

Let's be serious -- no trade is happening
"Is somebody trying to give Twins fans a heart attack? The idea that the team would choose now to trade Mauer is rather preposterous. Forget the notion of dealing him to cover for the loss of Joe Nathan -- if you're getting a reliever back in a package for an MVP catcher, you're doing it wrong. The real issue is that the Twins can anticipate attendance and revenue bumps in their long-awaited new Target Field. That gives them their best chance to re-sign their star catcher, and while he won't come cheap, he hasn't hired Scott Boras to take a hard line top-dollar stance. The Twins have shown a great deal of fiscal discipline over the years. If they're not going to splurge on Mauer, they might as well go back to the Metrodome." - Jay Jaffe

Would any Twins fans here really get a heart attack if Mauer was traded? I know that if I was a Twins fan, I'd probably kill their GM if he did that. There is only so much you can save before you have to put your step down and not let your best player (probably future Senator/Governor) go. And also because I'm not too keen on seeing the Yankees acquire him just because they have a billion zillion dollars to spend.
