So you're stuck on an island and you catch a fish. The fish says "I'll grant you one wish, but the wish is restricted to having a huge box of every cd of one musical genre wash up on shore. I'm a reasonable fish so I'll let you strech it, but not too far. You can't get Blondie in the rap genre just because she made the first rap music video, for example"
So naturally you say "I also need a musical system and batteries that never die or something"
He says "Granted. You have 5 minutes to think about this so pick well. Also I need you to rank it just in case there a CD shortage back at the ranch"
What do you pick?

1. Alternative/Grunge - Nodd Morris, Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, REM, Cranberries, RHCP, Beck, Radio Head, No Doubt, Weezer
2. Classic Rock, Beatles, Stones, Elvis, Queen, Hendrix, Led Zep, Mama's and Papas
3. Classical - Beethoven, John Williams, Danny Elfman, Wagner
4. Rap - Eminem, Dre, Snoop, Beastie Boys, D12, Wu Tang Clan
5. Top 40/Pop Michael Jackson, Madonna, Lady Gaga, various one hit wonders, etc
6. Soft Rock - Jack Johnson, Elton John, Simon and Garfunkel, Jewel, Lisa Loeb, Clapton, Sheryl Crow
7. Latina - Shakira, Santana, Enrique Iglesias, Ricky Martin
8. Motown - Four Tops, Boys II Men, Temptations, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Barry White
9. 80s hairbands - Guns and Roses, Metallica, Kiss, Alice Cooper
10. Jazz/Blues. I know almost nothing about this music, but am very willing to try it. Vince Guaraldi. Harry Connick
11. Disco
12. Country - this is the point where I start bargaining with the fish to maybe send books and comics or maybe comedy CDs or instruments and teach yourself books so I can make my own music
13. Reggae
14. Anything by Yoko Ono. My theory is I'll just put it in a safe place so that if I ever get rescued I can be like "And look at the only music I had to listen to!" so people will be like "Oh my God! How did you not kill yourself?" and feel extra sorry for me and let me go on the talk show circuit.

I'd choose number one. Nostalgia would win out if were trapped on an island.

I know I am probably the exception, but
#1 I'd pick Country - not the old twangy country but new country with Garth, JMMontgomery, Colin Raye, Toby Keith, etc.
#2 would be the golden oldies of the 60's Beatles, Stones, Animals, - All the groups of the British invasion and that era.
#3 would be contemporary Christian

Dont classic rock and alternative go hand in hand? I kind of consider bands like alice in chains classic rock at this point? WErent bands like Led Zeppelin and the stones at one point alternative? Even soft Rock. Same thing. Elton John, Simon and Garfunkel were all kind of alternative at one point like Tori Amos and became classic rock. I just like Rock music and classics. Alternative, Soft, heavy metal, hair whatever. As long as it rocks? Metallica was more heavy metal. Queen and Kiss started the glam thing more than MEtallica who went against all that hence the long hair but black. MEtallica was still a hair band sure. But the same could be said for Van Halen and Led Zeppelin. They had long hair.
I'm just confused by your classification is all.

On that note I would say hard rock is my favorite genre. Not quite heavy metal and not soft rock. Although i like those too. But bands like Zeppelin, Van halen, alice in chains, even gnr, foo fighters, queens of the stone age, thats the stuff i like the most. The STones are good too. Queen. Thats all hard rock and pretty much classic rock i guess.

Take my hair band category and rename it hard rock. Move Hendrix, Led Z, and Queen down to that category. Really I was just trying to bargain with the magic fish to get a good collection

Wow..this magical fish must work for Rolling Stones magazine or something if he is to know so much about music.
Noone going for some feel good ABBA music on the island to keep your spirits up until help arrives? Some Dancing Queen or Mamma Mia perhaps?
