I have to admit, I did not see him coming. Clearly Doc Rivers didn't either, and one wonders if he still doesn't see him. Leon Powe has blown away expectations this year, and if it weren't for limited and inconistent minutes, he'd be a unonimous Most Improved Player in the NBA this season. How good has he been? Since January 1, when Powe plays 25 minutes or more, he is putting up Kevin Garnett like numbers:
17.7 ppg 8.7 ppg 65% fg
These are staggering. Nobody saw this coming, nobody. He gets high percentage shots, works as hard as any player in the NBA, and just seems to be stronger than everyone else. He really is like a smaller Dwight Howard. The world has recognized Rondo this year, and is starting to give him the proper respect he deserves, but I don't think anybody knows about Leon Powe. He is one of the many reasons I am excited to be a Celtics fan today, and for many years to come.

Great post (K+). I never understand why Doc doesn't play him more.

I have been a big Leon Powe fan right from the beginning. I have been frustrated with Doc not playing him because even last season, when he would get in the game, he would do good things. He gives us toughness and rebounding inside. he may be undersized but he has those long arms that make up for it. plus, he is a positional rebounder and just knows where to be to get the rebound. I'd like to say I saw it coming. If you look back on my posts even last season I was very, very high on this kid.

I'm a Rondo and Powe supporter, it's pretty obvious to see(even last year) how much heart and effort Powe lays out on the floor..To say I knew Powe would be THIS good is obviously giving myself wwaaaay too much credit..I just simply loved the guy, but who can resist that?

He is one of the many reasons I am excited to be a Celtics fan today, and for many years to come. I knew Powe could play in the NBA but I've been pleasantly surprised at what he's done in the second half of the season when given the minutes. Powe came to the Celtics under the radar because of his injured knee. If not for his knee, Powe would have more than likely been a lottery pick. When Powe was at Cal, he averaged 20/10 on basically one and a half legs and constant double teams. People including many Celtic fans talk about Powe being undersized and therefore, write him off as a garbage time player. What people don't realize is Powe can use his tweener size to his advantage. He is quicker than most guys bigger than he and stronger than those who are the same size. This is why you see Powe go to the line as much as anybody given his limited minutes. What Celtic fans are seeing is a Leon Powe at or near 100% physically. In single coverage, Powe is a hard man to stop and that's why I still think he can be more productive in the pros than even in college.

Good point about Powe's size working to his advantage, expobear. I always knew that Powe was going to be a player. All he needed was a chance.

We all saw what Powe was capable of last year. Thats why there are many threads on this board by us yelling at Doc to give Leon more PT earlier this season. He's proven time and again that when given the minutes he will produce. I like the fact that fans from other teams undervalue our bench and players like Powe. Our bench is going to be critical for us now that we are in the post season.

Powe will most likely win 6th man of the year next year. Even though he is probably the best 6th man right now. I'm not so worried about doc not playing him early. He's playing now and is probably a better player because of it. Watching him last season and early in his career his offense needed refinement and he would lock up offensively at times. Doc would put him out there and he was hesitant making his move, so rather than play him and destroy his game I'm sure they worked with him in practice to make his move quicker and which move to make. We were also able to get Davis some much needed time early. I still have no clue how anyone can knock doc the way this team has come together and been together from the 1st practice. We will probably be even better next year. Doc has done an amazing job and should be considered for coach of the year imo. Either him or Byron Scott. Patience is a virtue.

Wow...that I totally disagree with. As long as Manu Ginobili is coming off the bench for the Spurs, he has that honor locked up. I love Powe, and he is going to be very good, but Ginobili is already a proven superstar. Also, with all the weapons we have, Powe isn't going to have the opportunity to put up the numbers necessary to win this award for another few years. Once Garnett fades into the sunset, then I believe he can be an all star, but he will have to wait his turn or go somewhere else if he wants to collect any such hardware.

I forgot about Ginobli. He is a 6th man, but I don't really see him that way. He's the 2nd best player on that team and they just happen to have him come off the bench.

Yea for sure...I think a lot of it has to do with playing time...Doc really holds the cards in terms of what level of national exposure Leon Powe will get...based on the numbers, if you play the guy 30 minutes a night he is going to give you numbers that could definitely put him in the running for 6th man of the year, and most definitely most improved. The only issue is getting him those minutes, with guys like Glen Davis, Posey and Brown around, it's tough for Doc to consistently get Leon those minutes. Now if next year Brown and Posey are gone, I think then you could see a huge jump by Powe. I actually hope that happens because if Powe does in fact become a 20/10 guy, we have an awesome future ahead.
