a huge trade just went down today. new york will acquire starbury, along with penny hardaway, and cezary trybanski and will send antonio mcdyess, charlie ward, howard eisley, milos vujanic, maciej lampe, cash, and also an unprotected 2004 first round pick and a future first rounder to the phoenix suns.
this is huge for new york. they are giving up a bunch to get marbury. it appears that phoenix is conceding this season. but they did get a bright prospect in milos vujanic, the best pg in europe right now. and lampe could make things interesting too. and if mcdyess gets completely healthy, phoenix will have a tremendously athletic forward combo with shawn marion and antonio mcdyess.
i'd like to try and get phoenix's draft pick for 2004. they will probably fall to the bottom of the teams in the league (they're not really that far off right now). they could certainly be a high lottery pick, enough to land emeka okafor.

this trade makes new york dangerous. the knicks don't have the fast break players to go along with starbury, but in the half court is where they'll be really tough. starbury can break down any player and he has dangerous weapons waiting to kick out to. van horn has been a man reborn and his outside shot should match well with starbury. and starbury will have fun finding allan houston for the three point strike. if starbury can make a guy like scott williams look good, he'll make kurt thomas look good.

i think isaiah thomas is making this trade to win now. and he is sacrificing their future in the meantime.

i don't know what to think of this yet. I'll have to let it sink in first. Phoenix will have lot's of cap space next summer but that doesn't garantee them signing star FA's. With Marbury gone, they don't have a good PG, and we all know how hard they are to get.
NY get's their PG that they've been looking for. They didn't give up much imo. McDyess may never be good again. Ward & Eisley are reliable, nothing more. Lampre doesn't seem to amount to anything & it's still uncertain whether Vujavic will make it in the NBA. Yes, they sacrificed their cap space for years to come but Baker, LaFrentz, Hardaway & others have proven that even bad contracts are tradable. They're over the luxury cap but the question remains whether the tax will ever kick in.

i think this trade is actually going to bite isaiah thomas in the butt in a few years. he's got an aging team and no youth movement to replace them when its time to move on. vujanic sounds every bit like a quality player, but we won't fully know until he comes over. but with european pg's making an impact these days (carlos arroyo, raul lopez, tony parker, etc.), vujanic could have been the next one to make some noise. and lampe is a young talent. losing these two, along with valuable lottery picks in 2004 and later, will dampen the knicks' ability to develop and put young players into their rotation to eventually take over for allan houston, keith van horn, dikembe mutombo, penny hardaway, kurt thomas, etc.
the knicks look good right now. but their window of opportunity will be closing very quickly.

If you ask me, this trade is almost as bad for the Suns as the Walker trade for us! It may be even worse!
The Suns are expected to let Ward walk. Decent FG shooter and 3 shooter. Should we pick this guy up?

i don't know how much ainge sees in charlie ward, but if we don't pull in raymond felton, than i would take a chance on him. he's not an ideal pg for me, but he doesn't kill a team either.
