Finally, college hoops is about to start. Though I won't be catching as many college games as I normally do, I am still excited about the upcoming season.
There aren't many players this year whom I am especially interested in (last year, it was Bogut and Fransisco Garcia). But there are quite a few players who I will pay close attention to, in hopes of being able to draft them when they come out. At the top of this list are Adam Morrison, Shelden Williams, and Josh Boone. I like Morrison a lot because he's the type of smart basketball player with sound basketball skills who can fit in well with our style of basketball. We are a team built around smart, high IQ guys (Raef, Delonte, Gomes) and really athletic players who have aggressiveness (Ricky, Tony Allen). Morrison fits into the former role.
Shelden Williams is a guy who could help us out with our interior defense. Not to be confused as the next Ben Wallace, Shelden is an aggressive shot blocker and rebounder. Though on the shorter side at 6'9", he has a wide and well built body, good lateral quickness, and solid athleticism. He's quicker and more agile than Perkins is and may become a more consistent shot blocker because of those qualities. And he's more polished as well. I certainly wouldn't mind using a first round pick on him.
I have been a Boone supporter since his freshman year. But now in his 3rd year at UCONN, Josh Boone has not fulfilled his high potential as much as he was expected to. He showed tremendous improvements early last year, but had a mysteriously dreaded second half. He's a double double guy on any given night when he's playing well and a 3+ bpg guy as well. He reminds me of a more fundamentally technical Tyson Chandler. I'd really like to see him play strongly the whole year.
Couple of Dukies I will be keeping my eye on are freshmen Greg Paulus and Josh McRoberts. Both had terrific games at the McDonald's All-Star game this season, and Paulus really impressed me with his court awareness. Needs work on his outside jumper, but may turn out to be the next excellent Duke player.
My 2 favorite college PG's are Jordan Farmar and Rajon Rondo. Farmar is a combination of Kirk Hinrich and Delonte West so its no wonder why I like this smart kid. Rondo is a freakish athlete who does things with the basketball that leave you shaking your head. But playing for Tubbie Smith at Kentucky is limiting his game to the point where he seems to be holding back too much. He's a feeler type of player who needs to be able to roam freely and use his creativity to fully utlize his talents.
Game starts this weekend, so looking forward to chatting with some of you college bball fans.
