What I would do is I would start off as a new coach with 8-12 yr olds then work my way as the ages get older. I think being a lazy coach is not an option even if its intermurals. I wouldn't care if it was a league with a bunch of lazier coaches, I would get onto my kids. My vision would be to rub off on them and help get newbies/project type players to get skilled and into shape so they can look forward to playing for me and make that continue for other coaches later on so I can see them make a travel team as they get older for their school. It would give me a sense of accomplishment if lets say 5 out of my 12 guys made varsity/jv. Ask me the drills I would run when you make your next reply. I wont list them right now.

This is an interesting post Meltin. Ive actually been thinking about getting into coaching. Ive been away from organized play for over 10 years and miss it a lot. I dont know what type of coach Id be. Id probably do the same and want to start by coaching young kids though.. I agree. I dont think lazyness is good for anything.. I would want to instill a winning attitude and be positive though. I dont know if yelling and screaming is necessarily the way to do that, although I think you have to be that way at times. The thing is each kid is different and should be treated that way. Some kids might shy away if you get on them too much. Scare tactics may be good for others. With kids instilling discipline is very important. So yes Id have them in seriously good shape and running drills like crazy. But Id try to make it fun too and rewarding if they are doing what I envision..

Or as weird as this sounds. If they have a good week, they get ice cream and if they have a bad week of play, they get fruit because fruit is actually good for you and kids only want ice cream cuz its what all kids want for desert so fruit would be a punishment to their emotional feeling but to their body, it do a lot of good. If I was coaching HS after I got past coaching little kids, I would want to coach ghetto kids who dont take the game as serious so I can get on their !!!GREENIAC!!! even more. A lot of urban kids show off so I would make sure none of that crap went on.
