KG was quoted before the season as saying that he felt Rajon Rondo would be one of the best pg's in the league within 2-3 years. The nation laughed at this statement, questioning whether or not he was even a capable starter. Die hard celtic fans felt the same way, but nobody was sure when Rondo would, if ever, get to that point. Although nobody is touting Rondo as a top 5 pg in the league right now, even KG would have to be surprised at how fast Rondo has developed.
Doc Rivers would probably fall into this "surprised" group also. If Sam Cassell had come to Boston in the beginning of the year, he would have had a very legitimate shot at being our starting pg. Not 60 games later, he had absolutely no shot. In fact, he would have to compete for really any playing time, that is how valuable Rondo has become in less than a year. Rondo has gone from the questionable young pg trying to lead a team, to outplaying Tony Parker and Chris Paul on the same road trip, in their respective buildings.
In my 20+ years of watching NBA basketball, never have I seen a player labeled with the "potential card" develop so fast in such a difficult situation. I have been on the Rondo bandwagon from the get go, and I never had any doubt that he would be capable enough to lead this team to a title. What I didn't know was that he would be one of the driving forces behind getting us there. Within 69 games, he has transformed himself from a streaky role player to a terror for many of the leagues best opposing pg's.
Theres a long way to go still, but I have a very good feeling that after all is said and done in the playoffs, Rondo is going to make a similar jump that Darren Williams did last year. It's not that far fetched if you think about it. If he continues to play the way he did on this last road trip, everyone will be talking about Rondo this offseason.
