Just read on Celticsblog that a Clipper's source says that Sam Cassell will be bought out, and that his strongest pursuers are the Mavs, the Nuggets, the Cavs, and us.
I think we have the best shot at Cassell. We have two All-Star players who have played well with Cassell in his career. He played with KG in Minnesota, and they made the playoffs a number of years together. He also played with Ray Allen in Milwaukee and they also did well together.
I doubt he goes to the Nuggets--compared to us and the Mavs, the Nuggets aren't the favorites to contend for the title. I doubt he goes to the Mavs since they Kidd now, and Jason Terry will be their backup. I can see the Cavs, but our chances of winning the title is greater.
My question to you all is, will Doc elect to go with a veteran lineup in the playoffs and insert Cassell in the starting lineup?

Also, if indeed we get Cassell, along with the addition of PJ Brown, I think our roster is now complete--no more immediate holes. For this season, I have no more desires to add anything more.
Our starting 5
Rajon Ray Pierce Garnett Perk
Bench (veteran oriented--which is good)
PJ Posey House Cassell
others (may see limited action)
Tony Pollard Powe or Baby or Scalabrine
I believe in the playoffs, the roster has to be pared down to 12, so either Powe, Baby, or Scalabrine will be left out, along with Pruitt
In the playoffs, Doc will probably go with a 9 man rotation, which means the last bracket of players will not get to see much playing time (unless foul trouble plays a part). He'll rely heavily on his veteran backups and probably won't use the young guys much at all.
I'm happy with our roster now. We have covered all bases. I'm very glad Ainge went out and got help at the 1 and 5. Its just the smart thing to do. Its never a bad idea to be extra cautious.

Sounds like it. I agree derren that the bench would basically be the 4 vets with pollard, ta, davis, powe getting spot duty. I like the idea of having a veteran bench. I dont know if we would be better, but we would be deeper and have more insurance. Getting Cassell and Brown are solid moves. I dont think Cassell becomes the starter. I do think he will play critical stretches during hte playoffs. But I still think Rondo remains the starter. Cassell may finish some games though.

I'm assuming if we get Cassell, Doc will play Rondo starter minutes like he does with Perk but finish the game with Cassell..Because i think one weakness Rondo has is leading us and directing us to finish the game as usually we become motionless and we don't move the ball around well..Too much isos so i think Cassell would help with that, though i'm only assuming...i want to see Rondo flourish as a leader on the court but i do see Doc finishing the game with Cassell in certain situations...

Los Angeles Clippers point guard Sam Cassell is expected to sign buyout papers with the franchise soon and will sign with the Boston Celtics once he clears waivers, according to an NBA source. Cassell and the Clippers have agreed to buyout terms. He is expected to receive some of the money remaining on his $6.1 million salary this season.
Cassell will not travel with the Clippers to Denver, where they face the Nuggets on Friday night. The Clippers are expected to sign guard Flip Murray, who was let go by the Detroit Pistons, to replace Cassell.

It's oficial. If we really get him, and considering we already have PJ Brown, #17 is getting closer and closer...
From Clippers website:
February 28, 2008 Clippers Waive Guard Sam Cassell
The Los Angeles Clippers today waived point guard Sam Cassell. In 38 games played this season, Cassell averaged 12.8 points, 4.7 assists, 2.8 rebounds and 25.7 minutes per game. In his 15th NBA season, Cassell had missed the last four games with a sprained right wrist while missing 12 games earlier in the season with a strained left calf.
“After weighing all of the options and after conversations with Sam we believe this is the best solution for this team,” stated Vice President of Basketball Operations Elgin Baylor. “We know and appreciate the many contributions Sam made during the last three years, and we wish him nothing but the best.”
Cassell notched his most productive season with the Clippers during the 2005-06 campaign when he tallied 17.2 points and 6.3 assists while helping lead the Clippers to within one game of the 2006 Western Conference Finals. During the Clippers’ 2006 Playoff run, Cassell averaged 18.0 points, 5.8 assists, 4.0 rebounds and 33.7 minutes in 12 games played.

We now have had every alien that has ever played the game in Eric Williams, Tony Delk and Sam Cassell.

I remember someone sugesting early in the offseason, several months ago, that if would get Cassel and Rondo in Boston, we would have the two ugliest PG's in the league in the same team!... So funny

Aside from the big moves to get Allen and KG, Ainge has filled the role player spots nicely with House, Posey and now PJ and Sam. Plus he kept a good mix of young "energy" guys to complement the veterans. This team addressed its only real issues -- a vet who was a true PG and a vet big man (so we're no longer the all-short team when we go to the bench). By playoff time, we should be ready to roll!

So funny who is the second ugly one? or does Cassell count as two? You could do much worse Kidd (anyone who had anything to do with the atrocity that is his son is ugly regardless of how they may look physically), Anthony Johnson, Darrick Martin, Jacque Vaughn, Greg Paulus.

Cassell has said that he is going to be in Boston on Monday when he clears waivers and will be ready to sign right away. The Suns and Warriors both have trade exceptions big enough to claim him off waivers but I don't see them doing it lest they end up with a very angry player and/or agent. Sam wants to come to Boston and a team that steps in and prevents that will have a disgruntled player and locker room cancer on their hands. Sam has already picked either #28 or 91 for the Celtics.
