Take one look at the imposing presence of the full bearded and menacing; Mark Murphy, Celtics columnist at the Boston Herald and you think of perhaps an outside linebacker for the Seventies Oakland Raiders, with a nickname like "Mark the Shark."
In reality, Mark is a warm and unassuming soul whose writing always portrays the event, without imposing his personality and conveys an artistic element not found on many sports pages, as displayed by this enthralling prose, from his Dec. 27th. column, describing Glen Davis.

His is the big, animated face that appears on the Garden Jumbotron every fourth quarter, exhorting fans to make some noise.
He was the chubby eighth-grader who won a middle school talent show by impersonating James Brown -- right down to the shades and the processed hair wig. He slid and dropped into a girth-defying, fully-extended split. Most impressively, Glen Davis got up again.
He always gets up. The Celtics [team stats] rookie is so hooked on the virtue of positive thinking, he could out-sell Tony Robbins on the book circuit.
If he ever writes a book. Don’t count him out. You never know. Davis is such as irrepressible character, he could star in his own cartoon. Maybe he already is.
They call him Big Baby, and part of the source for that name is a huge reserve of passion that wells up before bursting like a geyser.
