Ain't it amazing how good Tom Thibodeau is at coaching defense? I mean, everywhere the guy goes, he gets immediate results. Right from the start, he got us to be the best defensive team in all the league. Yes, we have some good defensive players, but I can count on one hand how many defensive players we have on this team. Thibo has made the entire team a defensive unit so that we don't have to rely on just the few defenders we have. We are an average team when it comes to blocked shots per game, but when the whole team is unified defensively, its all about making it tough for the opponents even before they get into the painted area.
But Thibodeau may want to be head coach one day, and lets say he wants that position next season. Every year, there are head coaching vacancies around the league, and I'm sure GM's and owners will quickly offer him a job based on his credentials as a heralded defensive guru who always gets results.
So what should Ainge do?
Should he say, "thanks for all you've done for us, Thibby", and let him go? Or will Danny contemplate keeping Thibodeau in Boston by handing him the head coaching job that belongs to Rivers?

I think all you can do is allow him to go. A guy like that deserves to be a coach and it wouldn't be right to try and hold him back. Plus unless Doc does something to negatively affect this team, I dont think it would be right to hand it to Thibby. Its a hard call that I wouldnt want to make tho.

That's the problem when you are good is other teams are going to start wanting what we have. Free agents as well. Why hopefully we will extend some of our players contracts as well before they get to that point. Same goes for our coaches.

Oh, just not renew Doc's contract and make Thibby the head coach.

What I'd do is call the big 4 into the office and say "What do you think"?

Do you think our success has more to do with Thibodeau's defensive touch, our Big Three and the key players we have this season, or Doc's leadership/coaching?
Let me answer that. Its all three.
But which one would you put more emphasis on?

Replace Doc with him..I believe our team success can be credited to Thibs defensive touch then the big 3 followed by Doc not trying to coach..Defense will lead to championships and this team even with the big 3 wouldn't be as great without their appreciation to defense

I know I'm relatively new to this forum, so for those who don't know I was a very big Doc supporter up until last season. I thought the coaching job he did was suspect as was his decision making. That said.............Doc is deserving of at least some credit, a team doesn't go 27-3 with a bad coach. Tibo is the man, there is no doubt, but I would rather have him and Doc working in tandem then to be faced with one or the other.

Interesting question. I like him but it's highly unlikely that Ainge and the board will give him Doc's job in this year. If he can wait until 09 maybe he can get the job.

No absolutely not. Any success Boston has this year will ultimately be credited to Doc Rivers. If this team does what we are expecting this year, Doc isn't going anywhere. Now if the team crumbles in the first round (highly unlikely) then maybe you have an interesting question for debate. My money is on Ainge giving a stiff handshake and a nice goodbye speech at the press conference, if they even have press conferences for Assistant coaches.

I think an interesting question would be: what if Doc wants more money?

Then he deserves it. If we win. He's still under contract for another year but if this team does what they should, then he deserves it. Doc isn't the type of guy who is goign to gouge any team anyways. He likes coaching here and if we win the next couple years he'll get a fair extension. Who knows what will happen. this team is basically set up for a 3 year window anyways and a lot of the assistant and players on the bench might start itching to play more or they might just like being on a good team. Plus guys aren't going to be here forever so the opportunity may be there for some of these guys waiting in the wings. Not just the coaches.

Doc had a team that was underachieving and now he has a team overachieving so I think it depends a lot on what happens in the playoffs and what other coaches are available.
