I read an article on yahoo the other day, and I was surprised that in a poll 60% voted that Phil Jackson is a better coach then Red was...... Is this just a sign of the times or what? Or a case of people being young and stupid? Me personally I never got to see Red in his glory but I can just tell from his demeanor and personality that I would take his side and want to be on his team any day of the week. Phil to me has always been somewhat of a snake and an opportunist. I'm not saying he isn't a smart guy and a good coach, but he's the anti Red imo.

Well it's hard to compare, because of the 25-40 years in between them.
In Red's favor: - he was an innovator - great evaluator of talent - Consistency (9 championships in 10 years)
Against Red: - Amount of teams (only 9 teams in 1965-66) - Talent Level (look at all the HOF's Russell Cousy Havlicek Heinsohn Jones'...) all on one team - Rules (nowadays its tough to run a fastbreak offense with tenacious defense) Also no 3-pt line etc. (They did allow 108 points in 1965-66)
For Phil: Amount of teams: (27+ teams in all of his wins) also more traveling Didnt have a team full of stars (only 2 at a time Kobe/Shaq MJ/Pippen) Had to deal with more egos (Kobe/Shaq/MJ) Money (more of it, contract disputes, free agency) parity can be included in her as well. Innovator as well but much less to innovate.
Against Phil: Had to have best player(s) in the game (Kobe/Shaq/MJ/Pippen) Technology (more of it whether it be gametapes, recovery time from injuries, whatever) History (he could look back at what Red did, but not vice versa)
Definitely more however, i think you get the point.

I don't think you can compare the two head to head. When Red won his championships, he was the coach, GM, trainer, scout, and just about everything else for the team. He built them from the bottom up and won. Phil Jackson came into teams already built and won with them. Red is the better basketball mind as he had to deal with every facet of the team and not just coach. He built the teams, Phil just coaches them. Both are good coaches but in completely different eras. I give the edge to Red overall.
