If the rumored trade is true and it is indeed Telfair, Green, Ratliff and jefferson for Garnett in principle with maybe someone else thrown in to get us a pg back or whatever, I have to say I'm very impressed with what Ainge has done. My hats off to him. He had a plan and he did it. When he came in he talked about trading for kobe, etc, etc, jokingly but this was his plan all along imo. I like Jefferson and all and he is going to be a very solid player for a long time, but we are getting one of the top players on the planet here.
The teams that win have the best players and Ainge knows this. It can be done in other ways ala Detroit, but historically the easiest road to a championship is by having the best players not mid tier players. Had we stuck with Jefferson we'd be struggle to win a championship and when Pierce and Allen retired, we'd struggle some more. Ainge had to take a shot.
seriously who wouldn't have traded all those picks for KG a few years ago. Jefferson was a mid first rounder, Green same. Telfair we gave up a higher pick for in a weak draft. All those picks were basically turned into Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett. Ainge had a plan and he did it. I'm pretty impressed..... He basically took 4 mid first rounders and a late 1st rounder(Delonte) and turned them into 2 top tier players when you really think about it.
He also managed to unload all the dead contracts on this team and maneuver them and keep the payroll up so he could make these trades. He turned Blount into Wally who became Allen. He turned Walker into Raef into Ratliff who became Garnett if I'm not mistaken. I'm not saying Ainge is Jesus but he did turn water into wine apparently.
I tend to think this is a done deal. From what I have read Rondo was first reported as part of the deal but this was nixed and the trade has been agreed in principle as mentioned. I'm assuming we are just waiting for Garnett to sign the extension and other players may be thrown iin to get us a pg perhaps..... Either way it's an exciting time to be a celtics fan again. ticket sales are going to be through the roof and hard to come by. We basically have a top 3 player in Garnett. A top 10 player in Pierce and a top 20 player in Allen. All in their early 30's and in the primes. Ainge can always draft, and a player like Jefferson can be replaced a lot easier than a Garnett. This is why I understand this. Jefferson is a top 25 player in his prime. I dont see Green or Telfair ever being star material. I think they can play and have potential and will stick in this league, but they were very expendable imo. We really gave up very little imo if this is true to swap Jefferson for Garnett. Team's dont necessarily win championships building around top 25 players. The teams that have won have always had a top 3 player outside of Detroit. Ainge got his man in Garnett and this is going to be exciting.
