I just posted this on Loy's Place but wanted to discuss it here. This really bothers me. I see other teams shut down players with plantar fasciitis and I see Perk playing through the pain. Last season Doc totally ignored doctors' advice to keep Wally's minutes around 25. He ignored the doctors' orders about keeping Pierce under 20 minutes and no back to backs. He was pushing Al to play through the pain last season. He doesn't feel that Pierce should sit even though he is hurting. This elbow thing could be a recurring problem if they push it too much. This stuff really bothers me!!
Today's Herald had an interesting article about Pierce. He is hurting and has considered possibly shutting down for the season.
Pierce is hurting. His elbow is once again red and swollen and leaking. He played quite a while with it last season before finally shutting down for the season. He gave it rest over the summer and then had surgery and it is once again a problem. You have to wonder if this is something that is going to be an ongoing problem late in every season. There is no reason for Pierce to be playing with an injury right now. We are not in a playoff race. We are playing for next year and it seems the best thing for next year would be to sit Pierce, allow him to get healthy, and play the kids to give them more experience.
This quote from Doc bothers me:
At this point, Rivers doesn’t think much of the theory that something can be gained by Pierce beginning his offseason early.
‘‘I don’t buy into that,’’ Rivers said. ‘‘I think you get paid to play, and if you’re healthy enough to play, you play. He’s not hurting himself. If he had an injury, then that’s a whole different ballgame. But he doesn’t have an injury that’s going to hurt him. To me, you play. . . . No would be my answer right now. I think you should want to play, and I think Paul does. I think he set a great example when he pushed hard to come back.’’
Is Doc letting his nickname go to his head? He knows that Pierce is not hurting himself by playing? How does he know that? Do the Doctors even know this? Doc was told to keep Wally's minutes down last season and he constantly played him way over the doctors' orders. When Pierce first came back, the orders were to keep him under 20 mpg and no back to backs. Pierce is averaging 35+ mpg and playing back to backs and he has been ever since he came back. Why take chances with the 20 million dollar man? If Pierce is hurting and his elbow is swollen and leaking for the second straight year, I say let him sit and get healthy. Does Doc have a personal agenda for wanting Pierce to play through pain? Is he afraid that if we don't make a run down the stretch that his job will be in jeopardy? He may have good reason to believe so.

‘‘I think about it,’’ Pierce said about the possibility of shutting his season down early. ‘‘I think about it definitely with the way my body’s been feeling since I’ve been back. I mean, it’s crossed my mind, especially with these remaining games and whether I should just take the rest and come back strong next season. But it’s a tough situation. I’m such a competitive person, I want to be out there. The foot’s been OK, but I think I’ve hurt other parts of my body because of it. When I first came back I really didn’t want to jump as much or put as much pounding on it. That ended up hurting other parts of my body.
‘‘I’ll probably have to sit down and talk with Doc. I know I’ve been having problems with my elbow and other parts. So I’ll probably sit down with coach some time after this road trip and talk to him about it and see what he thinks.’’
