Pierce has been asking for veteran help this season, and even told the media that he would prefer Ainge passing up our high draft pick in order to get us veteran help.
Ainge is not going to give up a chance at the 1st overall pick, and even without the top pick, we can still land a very talented player a few spots lower. Pierce will not convince Ainge to give up the pick.
Will this be enough to make Pierce ask to be traded, again (like he did in the summer of '05)? Even if we get Oden or Durant, they won't instantly play like a veteran and it'll take time for them to really settle in and individually play at a playoff level.
Will Pierce be able to stomach a couple more seasons of development? Gerald is still growing, as is Rajon and Telfair, and though Jefferson has taken huge steps forward, he's still learning the NBA game.
