Time for Doc to do some tweaking to the lineup and see what combination of young players work the best. I doubt we'll see it, but here's what I'd like to see:
PG- Telfair
SG- Tony
SF- Gerald
PF- Powe
C- Jefferson
Backup PG- Rajon
Backup SG- Allan Ray
Backup SF- Wally
Backup PF- Gomes
Backup C- Scalabrine
I like the athleticism and energy that Powe and Jefferson bring to the table. Putting them on the court together gives us 2 post scorers, 2 high volume rebounders, 2 athletic shot blockers and 2 energy big men. I think this combo will be more impactful than Perk and Gomes--our usual starting combo.
Inserting Gerald is a no brainer. I was thinking of experimenting with Allan Ray at the starting 2 because I think he gives us what we want from Delonte, but Delonte can't deliver--a quick catch and shoot guy who doesn't take forever to shoot the ball. He's going to be a better scorer than Delonte because in a pinch, he's got the ability to get his own shots off. But in the end, I gotta go with Tony Allen. Next to Gerald, Tony is our best athlete, and his athleticism and quickness creates a lot of benefits for us--both offensively and defensively. Tony has been our second best rebounder lately (next to Jefferson) and he's also good for 2 steals per game. Plus, his slashing ability has been huge for us.
If Tony ever develops a consistent jumper, watch out.
Overall, without Pierce, Doc will have to rely on different strategies to keep our offense moving (we can expect even more double teams on Jefferson). Using our speed and quickness in the open court, like we did in the summer league, will be a good way to stay away from prolong scoring slumps.
