Getting Iverson kills our future in various ways. Keep in mind that he's already 31 yrs old and has been beaten up and physically abused for over a decade in the NBA. He comes with a lot of wear and tear and mileage and a lot of baggage in his trunk. For his 11 year career, he's averaging nearly 42 mpg and that's just too many minutes for one player to have to endure year in, year out, especially when he's been the main focus and the target for every team he's faced. Pairing him with Pierce, who turns 30 next year, who also has a lot of mileage, means that our window of opportunity to win a title is realistically less than 5 years. Players start to slow down in their 30's, and the deterioration process speeds up pretty quickly once you get to that point.
Now look at the young talent we'll be losing to acquire Iverson. Maybe Jefferson, maybe Green, for certain one of the other young guys from the collection of Gomes, Delonte, Perk, Telfair, Rondo, etc. If we lose either Jefferson or Green, we lose a key component for our future success. And when our 5-year window of opportunity closes, we lose both Iverson and Jefferson/Green, leaving us weaker than we are now.
And then consider that there may be a strong chance that we lose a first round pick to Philly. This is a top heavy draft that could land us a big time player, even if we don't get a top 4 pick. A pick in the 5 - 10 range could land us a player who fills a need, but we'd lose that opportunity because of the trade.
Ainge has always been about looking over the horizon and not just looking at the here and now. He must see that this band-aide attempt to win a title right now is not only a weak investment, but also cripples our future. Holding onto what we have (mainly our youth), and adding key pieces around our core is the best way to go. It will take us a few more years to finally be ready to step up to the plate, but it will be well worth it, and our window of opportunity to win a title (or three) will be much longer.
Don't do it, Danny,
