I tried playing with different scenarios in my mind, and actually a threesome of Pau, Pierce and Wally could possibly do some damage. Throw in Perk at Center and Telfair at PG and we have a pretty solid looking starting unit.
Perk, Gasol, Pierce, Wally and Telfair
I am willing to give up Jefferson since we'd be getting back Gasol (who's only 5 years older than Jefferson). But I'd hate to give up Gerald.

No freakin way. No way. No way. This is Joe Johnson for the easy, cheap, shortsighted way out. This is what we know about our (young team) team Powe is one of the best young pfs in the league but he gets no minutes at all. There are only two bigs legitimately outplaying him this year from his draft class. Alridge and maybe Sean Williams by virtue of ... MINUTES! Rondo is one of the best young pgs in the league, but he gets no minutes Perk has leveled off a bit, and is what 22 years old? Al is in a similar boat cause ... HE GETS NO MINUTES! TA isn't as good as we thought GG is one of the most athletic players in the league right now, but he gets ... NO MINUTES! Delonte is an excellent backup and we know this cause he got minutes Sebass at the old age of 20ish is still slowly and painfully improving and if you look at his stats they aren't that bad for a 20 year old pg. Gomes is an excellent backup who plays at least two positions. We know this cause he got minutes.
Now here is the insulting part. Scala sucks. We know this cause he continues to get minutes. We also know that Kandi will probably never be that good in this league. Why do we know this? Cause he got minutes. Every time these guys get minutes and a young guy doesn't it's an insult.
If DA wants to fold his cards without even looking at his hand he's a fool. Especially if he does so without firing Doc and doesn't hold Doc accountable.
Pau is not a gold or silver or bronze medal player. Pau = no championship. Pau and PP and Sebass is really not that much better than Pau, Gay, Atkins, and Miller.
If our players are that bad fine. Get Oden. Get a gold medal player. Not Pau.

Successful Scenario Due to Memphis and Boston being over the cap, the 25% trade rule is invoked. Memphis and Boston had to be no more than 125% plus $100,000 of the salary given out for the trade to be accepted, which did happen here. This trade satisfies the provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

A lot depends on the physical condition of Pau Gasol of course but the idea here is bribe Memphis with No 1 picks AND Gerald Green to commit Memphis to complete rebuilding and giving Pierce and Wally two more good veterans to work with. Miller can be a devastating 6th man here.

Take the higher of Boston Chicago picks plus give Boston a future draft pick to compensate for talent.
I picked Sweetney and Brown because both contracts expire at the end of '07 so Boston clears cap space. Of course, I think Chicago is in great position to make a pitch to Memphis for Gasol and Miller.
Boston's future core of Pierce, Gasol, Perkins, Miller, Gomes, Powe, Telfair, Rondo, West could be outstanding.

Whoa, something is wrong here. I'm actually agreeing with Eja for once ;D Good points there, Eja. I'm also under the impression that we have a lot of good young players who are being stymied by lesser talented players who are getting more playing time than them. I really enjoy watching Gomes clean up misses and score off of quick putbacks, but he can do that off the bench and it'll prove to be just as important. Powe needs to get some of his minutes. Gerald definitely needs to get playing time. The sooner he gets comfortable on the court, the faster we'll see his game rise.
Telfair and Rajon need to be given the keys to run the team, instead of running set plays on 99% of our possessions.

Karma to Eja.... I agree. Powe needs more minutes. Playing Pierce for 45 minutes may win one game, but won't do a thing for our future. Green needs more minutes, Powe is much better than Scal and has proved that he can play in the 2 games that Doc has played him. I keep saying that Perk has progressed as far as he has in spite of getting virtually no playing time. He had a total of 19 minutes all season his first year, averaged 9 mpg his second season and 19 last season but the first part of the season was getting less than 10 before Blount was traded and when he finally did start getting 20+ mpg he hurt his shoulder. I did a piece on this on Loy's place this morning. I would much rather have a 5 and 8 record if Powe, Green, Al, Rondo, and Perk were getting more minutes. But you know, if they were getting more minutes, I think our record would be even better because Scal hasn't done much for us and in the losses, Pierce and Wally were a big part of the problem.

On trading for Gasol, I would only do it if our core of young players isn't traded. First, i am a bit leery of big men after foot surgery. History has shown that many times they are never the same (see McHale, Walton, Camby, Pervis, etc).
From what I have read, if they do trade Gasol, they would be trying for a salary dump to try to start over. We could maybe get him by dangling our draft picks in front of them along with Ratliff's soon to expire contract and maybe Scal, Kandi, or Tony.

Here's what I'm hoping will happen. We'll trade Pierce to the Bulls, who have been wanting a star player for some time now (like FL12, I want to keep our core young players), in turn they will ship over Luol Deng, the Knick's 1st rounder, maybe Chris Duhon, and we'll also send the Griz Ryan Gomes (the Grizzlies are going to want a PF who is ready to contribute since they'll be losing Gasol), maybe another young player. And we end up with Gasol.
I'm not into checking to see if trade scenarios work; I leave that part up for Ainge--I just come up with the ideas ;D
Bulls lose Deng, Gordon, NY's 1st rounder Celtics lose Pierce, Gomes Grizzlies lose Pau Gasol
Bulls get Pierce Celtics get Gasol Grizzlies get Deng, Gordon, Gomes, NY's 1st rounder

If we are losing Pierce, we shouldnt be giving up Gomes. If anything, we should be getting an add. first rounder.

I throw in Gomes because if we are holding onto Jefferson, that means we'll have Gasol and Jefferson at the PF slots and that's not counting Leon Powe either. Powe is a guy who shows a lot of promise as a physical rebounder and inside scoring presence. I see a lot of the same qualities that Gomes has in Powe--especially the ability to clean up missed shots and score off of putbacks.
Will the Grizzlies want Gomes? Yes I do think they would. Out of Jefferson, Gomes and Powe, Gomes is the most ready-to-play, as he has the most starts among the three. They may take Jefferson over Gomes if they are willing to wait until he reaches his apex.
Yeah, I would also like to get another 1st rounder, since this draft is looking pretty good (at least in the top half of the first round). Maybe giving up Gomes will allow us to reel one in.

Powe is one of the best young pfs in the league but he gets no minutes at all. Maybe he doesnt get any minutes because he's not all that good.

I can totally go by the logic that maybe a guy doesn't get minutes cause he's not good, except two things. How can you know if a guy is no good if you never give him minutes in the first place, and by that logic I guess Scala is a great player or at least Doc thinks he is along with Raef and Blount. They got minutes. If Powe is so much worse than Scala how come he totally outplayed him in the preseason and is generally just as good now when he actually does get minutes, even though he is a younger rookie?

It could come down to a case that Powe is overmatched against Gomes and AlJeff every day in practice. I'm not saying that Powe cant be a good player, but I highly doubt that we have the next Elton Brand rotting away on our bench.
