We are playing well right now, and I'm willing to stick with what we've got to see how far we can go. But honestly, seeing how well this team is clicking with each other, even when Pierce is struggling or sitting on the bench, I think the loss of Pierce won't be as disastrous as fans may initially think. Wally is looking like a very good fit in our quick offense, moreso than Pierce (I like seeing Wally come off of curls and execute catch and shoots to perfection). Gerald may be able to replace Pierce in a couple of years as a go-to scorer in a pinch, and with so many supplementary scorers we have emerging (Jefferson, Gomes, Powe, Delonte, Telfair), we just may be able to recover from losing out on one of the best scorers in the league. And on top of that, losing Pierce will allow this team to grow even more as a team offense, uitlizing more players' scoring ability.
So with this in mind, if we had to move Pierce, I'd knock on Golden State's door. Pierce will be happy to go to the Warriors, where he will be close to home, and where he will be paired up with his long time buddy Baron Davis. And with Don Nelson turning things around (currently sitting pretty at 7 - 4), he won't be going to a dumpy losing team.
The player I'm most interested in getting in return is Monta Ellis. Just in his second year, this young kid has made big time improvements in his game to the point where he's a legitimate impact player on the rise. Criticized for being a combo guard who wasn't looking like much of a PG (he stands at a solid 6'3"), Coach Don Nelson has instead focused on his strengths and has Monta using his speed and athleticism to be a scoring sparkplug off the bench (edit: he's now starting for the Warriors). And that's what I want him to be on our team--a quick and aggressive uptempo scorer who can shoot and attack the rim (and this kid does not lack confidence and he wears a determined game face as well).
I got to see a Warriors game last week and Monta looked spectacular. At this time, he's averaging 18.7 ppg and 4 apg, and he's starting to raise his game to a higher level. In his last 2 contests, he's put up consecutive 31 pt, 7 assist games. His value is drastically rising high, and soon every team looking to trade their star player will be asking for Monta.
Offensively, he's what we're dreaming Delonte to be. He's quite a bit more explosive, athletic and creative than Delonte and he's much more aggressive on offense. He may even help our pressure defense because of how quick he is (he's also averaging 1.1 spg).
I haven't really looked into the salary portion of the trade, nor do I have a strong desire to acquire any other player(s) on the Warriors' squad (I like Ike Diogu, but we have enough young PF's on our team already). Maybe Ainge can be creative and include multiple teams in the trade.
Telfair (6') or Rajon (6'1")
Monta (6'3")
Gerald (6'8")
Jefferson (6'9")
Perkins (6'10")
Quick and explosive team with a lot of offensive firepower. Should be able to play excellent pressure defense that produces a bunch of steals in the backcourt due to our quickness, athleticism and length. Frontcourt has rebounding muscle and solid shot blocking presence (lets thank Clifford Ray for this). But speed is the name of the game with this lineup!! This team will run all day and all night and then some, but also has the goods to be a tough halfcourt team because of our inside outside game.
