Couple that with this statement from Bird
Maybe Indy will be having a fire sale.

Tell Bird we like some of our young guys too. We should do the deal when the draft comes. On the day of the draft I bet what will happen is we'll draft some pretty good player in the top 3-5, then trade Tony, Al, Sebass, and Wally for a JON, so hopefully we enter the season with something like
Oden JON PP Rondo GG
West Ray Powe Gomes

Hopefully O'Neal doesn't cost too much.
I rather give up Ratliff than Wally but, using Green at the 3 is very intriguing though.
C - Perk PF - O'Neal SF - Green SG - Pierce PG - Rondo
Yeah, I like that lineup.

I like it even better when you add top draft picks to it. Maybe we can get a draft pick from Golden State. I'm sure them being a good team is a temporary thing

No to Webber (although a young Chris Webber reminds me of Leon Powe).
As for O'Neal, the cost will probably be high, probably Pierce. Bird probably likes Wally, but if he's going to lose out on his star player, he's going to want a star player in return, and we know that Bird has stated in the past that he likes Pierce.
But if Bird loses his PF, he's going to want a big man in return. I'm thinking Gomes is the type of player Bird would like. Can't count out Perk or Jefferson either. I doubt he'd take Ratliff, since Theo can't prove to stay healthy.
If I'm Ainge, I will not give up Gerald Green or Al Jefferson, and I'd be hard pressed to give up Telfair, Rondo or Powe too for that matter.

it's a two edged sword: for one jermaine is soft as marshmellow and always injured. look for indiana fansites, they are even considering szczerbiak/raliff for o'neal swap. so that pretty much says what they think of him. there's also no way i would want the celts to part with rondo, green, jefferson, perkins and pierce. the rest could be traded away if needed the only one i would really want from indiana roster is ggranger. call me stupid but i would even trade west/gomes for granger to balance our roster. larry happens to like those two of our youngsters the most

Indiana's real problem is at both guard positions. Larry Bird signed up Orien Greene to back up Jamaal Tinsley. What does that tell you. As for SG, Stephon Jackson has gone straight south and Jaskawatchmacallit has not panned out. Indiana has serious issues on that team.

Of course Bird will ask for Pierce as the inital offer but I doubt Ainge will give him up for Jermaine O'Neal. Wally + young PG prospect and maybe a draft pick could get a deal done. I seriously think if we do pursue O'Neal, Bird is going to ask for our 2007 draft pick and I wouldn't be shock if Ainge budges to get O'Neal.
