Let's face it celtics fans, Doc Rivers is a dead man walking and it's only a matter of time before he's fired. It's never to early to look at possible coaching candidates for the celtics.
I'm looking at Stan Van Gundy. Larry Brown would be nice, and i know he would love nothing more than to stick it to the knicks, but brown is to high maintenance.
Van gundy will be available next season. He's basically under a gag order from miami not to spill the beans on what really happened last season when the veterans sabatoged him, and riley took over. The man is icthing to get back into coaching. Here's why i like him.
1. Defense- He's from the pat riley tree of coaching, and we all know riley ever since leaving the lakers has been about defense. Jeff Van Gundy has always been a defensive coach, and the same goes for stan. One of his frustrations with the heat team last year before riley took over was the team wasnt dedicated to the defensive end. This man will get the young players to buy into his defensive scheme.
2. Development of young players- I havent seen it wiith rivers. Van gundy meanwhile is great with them, and isnt afraid to let the young player do their thing. Three years ago the heat started 1-7, and went on to the second round of the playoffs, before bowing out to a superior pacers team in 6. That team had far exceeded expectations.
Here's the kicker, his best players on that team were Dwyane Wade, Caron Butler, and Lamar Odom. Van gundy, not riley should be given credit for the emergence of wade. Van gundy instilled confidence in the young man, and he showed wade he wasnt afraid to put the ball in his hands at crunch time. Remember at the time Wade was just a rookie.
I think the celtics organization needs to make a serious run at him next season. I know he would love to stay in the eastern conference, and have an opportunity to get back at the heat organization. If WADE AND SHAQ dont get injured 2 years ago van gundy is sporting a championship ring.
Bottom line is this, he's the best unemployed coach out there. G o get him!!!!!!!!!
