Guys, lets take a step back, take a deep breath and look at our team with wide angle lenses. We played 3 good teams who have a good shot to make the playoffs this season (Hornets, Pistons, Wiz), and we played them competitively even though we weren't playing at our best. Tonight was the 1st night we played well offensively, but it was our defense that killed us (along with our 23 turnovers). Defense continues to be a problem for us, and I hope something gets done soon (whether we bring in a defensive minded assistant, or a new head coach who can get the team to play better defensively). But the positive note is that we are improving our offense, and at this point, any type of improvement is welcomed.
Now, if we consistently lose to teams like the Bobcats and the Sonics, then my finger would be on the panic button. But as for now, I'm going to give it some more time to let this team work out its kinks.
But this doesn't mean I'm not willing to go get a new coach. If there's someone out there right now who can improve our team defense, while allowing our offense to run its present course, then yes, by all means, lets go get him. I worry that Larry Brown will stifle our young player's development and forgo our offense, and I worry about Adelman not caring enough for defense.
Is there a happy medium? Is Dennis Johnson a guy who fits this bill? Or what about KC Jones? Or Stan Van Gundy (he's not doing anything right now)?
And on a final note, the best thing Ainge can do for us right now (aside from getting us to play better defensively) is get us a tall and athletic SF who is strong defensively, and who can guard our opposing team's best player. We need someone who can guard the likes of Vince Carter, Kobe Bryant, Gilbert Arenas, Rip Hamilton, Rasheed Wallace, etc. We get killed more from perimeter players than we do on the inside. Getting a tall SF who can guard 3's and 2's will be huge and I think it will lead to vast improvements on our team defense.
