at Detroit Pistons at Boston Celtics TD Banknorth Garden 7:30 pm TV: FSNE, League Pass Radio: WRKO Probable Starters Point Guard vs Shooting Guard vs Small Forward vs Power Forward vs Center vs Key Celtics off the Bench Keys to the Game: Make free throws. We missed way too many in the opener and we have to make our free throws if we expect to win. Limit turnovers. At one point in the first period, we had almost as many turnovers as points. We have to take care of the ball. Play defense. In the opener, our defense was virtually non-existent. We need to play team defense and play it for 48 minutes, not just in spurts. Rebound. We need to win the battle of the boards. Run, Run, Run. In the opener we were stuck in a half court game almost the whole game while the Hornets were running. We need to run. Don't lapse into bad habits. In the Hornets game we went back to passing the ball to Pierce and just standing around and watching him. Don't bring a knife to a gun fight. In other words, don't rely too much on small ball. It is ok in spurts but not the whole game. We still need one or two bigs in the small lineup because we need rebounders. You can't run without the ball. Both teams lost their openers and will be hungry for a victory. I believe we can beat this team, but everyone has to pull together and play team ball and more importantly, play defense.

I didn't think the defense was non-existent in the opening game. It wasn't perfect, but I thought we played well enough defense to put us in position to win the game. But to win this game, we really need our defense to step up.
We play another top notch PG, after facing one of the best in our 1st game. Sebastian and Rajon are going to be put to the test again.
We need our guys shooting the ball well, especially Wally and Delonte (Wally was just off, and Delonte was not putting up shots against the Hornets).
We need Bassy and Rajon penetrating frequently--scoring as well as dishing off. We also need consistent tempo pushing. As soon as the ball is released, our guys need to sprint down court.

You are right, we did pick up the defense toward the end. I guess I should have said that the defense was non existent for 3 quarters. It wasn't until the 4th that we started showing some energy on defense.

The defense looked really good in the mid/late third quarter. I know the Hornets had quite a stretch where they didn't make a field goal of any kind. Sadly, with a team this young, defenses lapses are going to be more the rule than the acception. We can blame Doc all we want, but with a team this young its almost impossible to keep them all on the same page defensively for an entire game. This is why coaches such as Larry Brown love to have a lineup that consists almost solely of vets.

Billups drops 50 on Telfair. We lose by 20. 0-2. 0-3 after Sat. Doc gets canned 2 weeks into the season and I rejoice! Woo-hoo!

Got this little snipit from Yahoo Sports:
Wallace's departure looked very costly, at least for one game, as the Pistons gave up 70 points in the paint in a 105-97 loss to Milwaukee on Wednesday. The Bucks started attacking the inside early, with Andrew Bogut scoring the opening basket after the Bucks grabbed rebounds off three missed shots.
Wow, 70 pts in teh paint is an extraordinary amount to give up. Doc should know this and attack the insde. Have Telfair and Rondo slice to the basket. Have Gomes and Al post up inside. Have Perk takes some shots too. If we insist on shooting the ball tonight, we aren't doing a good job of scouting our opponents.

Starting lineup is Perk, Gomes, Pierce, Wally, and Telfair. They are launching the dancers. It is a good thing Red didn't have to watch it. My hubby enjoyed them though. Scal is still in a suit.

Amazingly enough Doc is leaving Perk in even though he is playing well. Pistons miss a layup and Perk with a weak side rebound. Gomes misses in the lane and Hamilton rebounds. Perk blocks Nazr's shot but is called for a foul. Nazr hits both FTs. Perk throws it inside to PP who can't handle the pass and Perk picks up his second foul chasing the loose ball. Al in for Perk. Prince hits a baseline jumper. Telfair hits a 3. PP with good defense on Prince and Gomes steals the ball but Pistons get it back. Pistons inbound with 1 on the SC. Telfair commits the foul as SC expires. He hits the first FT. Rondo in for Telfair. He hits the second FT.

The Celtics are off to a better start - taking advantage of Detriots spongey middle for layups, rebounds and 2nd chance opportunities. Detriot as expected are posting up their guards.
This will be a fair matchup.
