Do we have something brewing with Akingbala? Is he a mystery man who could turn out to be a player for us? Might he be a sleeper player who slides under everyone's radar (like Ben Wallace did when he went from team to team, begging for someone to keep him)?
Well, we did give up a promising young player (Dwayne Jones) when we could have just as easily cut Akin Akingbala.
Doc said recently that the raw Akingbala has defensive skills that no one on the team has. Amazing comment to make when we have a proven defensive player in Theo and a young defensive stalwart in Perk.
All we know is that, as of right now Akingbala is still on the team while we are looking to streamline an overcrowded roster. Yeah, so is Pittsnogle, but we know that the only reason why Pittsnogle is still being given a try is because he's our only big man who can shoot from downtown. He gives us an element that no one else can offer. But Akingbala is here because of his defensive abilities (as raw as they may be at this time), even though Theo and Perk are here. And from what we saw of Dwayne Jones, he had defensive potential as well, but he was cut loose and shipped to Cleveland.
So either Akingbala is some sort of defensive player in the making, or he's a terrific chef and that's why Ainge and Rivers are keeping him aboard.
We'll see if he makes the next cut.

Doc said recently that the raw Akingbala has defensive skills that no one on the team has. raw Akingbala sounds like some sort of Japanese seafood delicacy. I doubt Akingbala will be here on opening day. I dont see a player worth cutting to keep him around.

But for some reason, they are holding onto him. From what I saw of him in the summer league, he wasn't worth hanging onto. But now we can see that he is more favored than Dwayne Jones, whom I thought had a chance to be a good player for us. DJ showed defensive promise and a real nose for rebounds. Seems like Doc and/or Ainge thinks he can be better than DJ, or else they wouldn't have dealt him away.
The way I seen it, I would have cut Kandi, Pitts and Akingbala and kept DJ.

While Ray will be safe from the cuts, don’t be surprised if Akin Akingbala manages to stick instead ofLeon Powe. The latter has some guaranteed money, but Akingbala has thus far been more impressive.
Wow, first DJ, now Powe. Akingbala is moving up the list. I'm really curious to know what Ainge and Rivers see in this guy.

Unless DA keeps Akingbala, I'm puzzled at the Jones trade. If he doesn't make the team, then Cs have 5 "bigs." That assumes Pitts is gone. And it includes Scalabrine. Which means 4---3 of whom are centers, with AJ---not projected to start---as the only 4. That's real think in bigs.
Last year raised serious questions about Gomes' chances of competing against bigger, better 4s.

guys, guys cometition is a good thing. if akingbala outshines powe and makes the roster then so be it. let the best man win. powe is a feelgood story but if someone is stronger than he then the celtics will be even better off. same goes for allan ray and luke wilson ...err jackson - i hope jackson will make the roster instead of ray. i just tend to prefer size when other things are equal.

But that's the thing--I didn't get the impression that Akingbala was better than Powe.

All things being equal, yes, having more height is an advantage. Plus, I like Jackson and think he'll have a good future here.

Yeah, that's why I'm curious to know what exactly Rivers and Ainge see in this kid. Does he really have defensive skills that Theo and Perk don't? And what might those be?

he'll probably be a IR guy who probably won't be on the team next year. Just like Dwayne Jones last year.
