now what the heck are we going to do with another guard? celtics.bostonherald.com/celtics/view.bg?articleid=162154The Celtics are about to make a trade today that will benefit them financially and possibly on the court, as well. According to league sources, the C’s will send center Dwayne Jones to Cleveland for former first-round pick Luke Jackson. The Celtics will also receive cash considerations in the swap and will get to take a look at Jackosn, the 6-foot-7 forward/guard, who is coming off back problems. Jackson, the 10th overall pick of Cleveland in the 2004 NBA Draft, out of Oregon, played in 36 games for the Cavs last season. The 6-foot-11 Jones, who was assigned to the Florida Flame of the Developmental League last season, was unlikely to make the Celtics’ roster, with some around the club intimating last week he could have been the first cut from camp. The presence of a revived Michael Olowokandi seriously hurt Jones’ chances of sticking.
also it appears that olwoksmjdbfjdnfkmkahakandi has a chance to stick around...

Hmmm.....losing DJ upsets me. I like this kid and thought that he really had a shot with this team. What's not to like about a guy who wants to get dirty and rebound in traffic?
But if we are going to lose DJ, at least trade him for a player I actually like--and I like Luke Jackson. I lobbied for Jackson in the '04 draft. I watched a lot of Oregon games (he and Ridnour made for a terrific backcourt) and was sold on his game.
If this trade does go down, I know why Ainge does it. Its easy to see that with the PG's we have (Telfair, Rondo), we need guys who can shoot the ball. The more the merrier. And our two best shooters are currently nursing injuries (Delonte; back, Wally; knee).
But also, look at this in terms of making moves to set up a future trade. Think about it; we are already overloaded with good wing players and we aren't strong in the frontcourt. But yet, we add another wing player and we trade away a big man. On the surface, it doesn't make sense. But if there's something brewing (and with Ainge, that's always a possibility), then it makes sense. Ainge may be aiming for a big man, with the intetion of trading away some of our solid wing players.
I think Pierce is staying, but everyone else around him may be up for grabs if Ainge is looking to reel in a big catch big man:
Wally Delonte Tony Gerald (no, no, no!!!) Ray

I never thought of jones as anything more than a player who would mop up in garbage time. He has nice size, but dosent have the bulk to compete on the low blocks. Olawakandi is 7 Footer and goes about 270. Jones is a toothpick. I was in favor of keeping olwakandi because he's going to be motivated, and has some skills that may be valuable to us down the line.
Again as we saw the other night perkins cant stay out of foul trouble. 5 FOULS WITH 9 minutes left in the 3rd is ridiculous. And come playoff time were going to need as many big bodies, and fouls as we can get. Luke jackson has no future with this team. I see ainge trading him for maybe a second round pick or future considerations.

I think this is a clever move. If worse comes to worse we clear good cap space for signing other young guys. If best comes to best we can now offer interesting trade packages.
DJ probably wasn't about to get minutes. He was maybe headed to the NBDL and his back hurt. There were rumors he might be the first cut. I'm surprised we were able to get anything for him in that case. These were the guys who were conceivably ahead of him Perk Theo Scala Akingbala
and with this whole small ball thing Al is getting minutes at center with Gomes at forward where we also have Leon Powe. And we still have Pitts.
Now with Luke Jackson on board we can offer a trade of maybe TA and Wally, give D West and GG more minutes and we still have a shooter in LJ to come off the bench. One with back problems but not knee problems. Plus Allen Ray who can be stashed in the DL for 2 years who is also a good shooter, so right when LJs contract runs out we have a good young replacement.
I think this has more to do with getting something for nothing, clearing salary and looking down the line. I really like the way DA sees that swing men grow on trees and he can replace age, injury, legal problems, and a guy that would want to be paid (Wally/TA) with youth, speed, shooting, and cheap (Ray, West, GG, LJ) without losing too much. This would even open up some more shots for guys like Rondo, Bassy, Gomes, and the bigs.
So then you ask what do we get for Wally and TA? Or just TA. Or LJ. Or TA and LJ? I don't know. Whatever. Maybe a big like Diogu or Patrick B or T Murphy, or put together a package for a JO or KG or Amare. Kaman? You never know if we can get a disgruntled big or big with injury issues. Charlie V? Bosh? Pau G? Emeka? Sean May? Kenyon? Boozer? Camby? I don't know.

I think this was a "Hey, maybe your junk will fit in with my team," sort of trade. I wouldnt be surprised if both of these guys are looking for work in a couple of weeks.

Well, its official now. Dwayne Jones out, Luke Jackson in.
Jackson Hopes To Find Role with Celtics By Peter F. Stringer Celtics.com October 13, 2006
MANCHESTER - Luke Jackson grew up as a Celtics fan, so he's got that going for him.
Jackson's not sure what his role will be, and neither is Doc Rivers. Rivers knows that the kid can shoot and put the ball on the floor, but injuries and pecking order limited his playing time in Cleveland.
"He's had some injuries, and he's really has not had a chance to play yet," said Rivers. "We're going to see through training camp [what he can do]."
Jackson, acquired in Friday morning's trade for Dwayne Jones and cash considerations, seems to think Boston will be a better situation for him than Cleveland was, and thinks that he can be a factor for the Celtics.
"I'm a team guy, a hard worker who can shoot the ball," said Jackson after his first shootaround with the Celtics.. "I'm excited to get a chance to play here. Playing behind the two highest paid guys on the team, LeBron James and Larry Hughes, there wasn't a great opportunity for me. I realize that Paul Pierce and Wally are two established stars as well, but I think playing up-tempo, it looks like coach wants to get a lot of guys in there."
Jackson woke up in Manchester, NH this morning expecting to take shootaround with the Cleveland Cavaliers. He'd heard from his agent Thursday night that there was a possibility he could be traded to Boston, but it was still a surprise Friday morning when he found himself heading to Waltham to join the Boston Celtics for a shootaround, only to take a bus back to Manchester, NH for the exhibition game against the Cavaliers Friday night.
"It was a little crazy, but I think I'll fit in well here," said Jackson. Jackson and a handful of reserves practiced about 10 extra minutes to help him learn some of the Celtics basic offensive sets.
Well, I'm glad we ended getting someone I like. LJ is a good scorer and he's a guy who can get his own shots too. Plus, and this is a big thing, he's a good team guy.
I just want to know how the rotation will shake up this season. There's no way Delonte, LJ, Tony, and Gerald are all going to get playing time in back of Pierce and Wally. Absolutely no way. One or two of them have to go.
If Tony doesn't start off the season with a bang, he's going to be on an extremely short leash.

AAAAAHHHHHH you said the J word. And who's future is in Europe? LJs or Jiri's? I wonder if they'll be on the same team.

Yeah, he does mirror Jiri Welsch, but to Jiri's credit, he has the game to be a solid role player. He's just not consistent enough with his shooting and production to stick with a team.
Luke Jackson is a better offensive player than Jiri, though. LJ is a guy who can get his own points (though not anywhere near the pace Pierce can get his points).
Another player whom LJ reminds me of Chris Mullin, and not just because he's a lefty.
