If you're reading this, I'm sure you know that we picked up to point guards this summer, Sebastion Telfair and Rajon Rondo (If not, you better start spending every waking hour here). I'm not going to get into a 'one is better than the other' rag, but I want to discuss the financial ramifications of these two.
One of things we as Celtics fans must hope for is that one of these two shows early on that they have the stuff to be the Celtics point guard now and into the future (Or the past if they want. If they can put up 15/8 a game, I could care less how much they time travel).
Why is this? One reason is money. The C's have a lot of players from the 2004 draft (Telfair, Jefferson, West, and Allen). All of these players will need new contracts in the next few years, and it is going to be tricky(or impossible) to get all of these guys under contract, so the smart money says that Danny will be wheeling and dealing in the next couple of years.
So how does this affect Rando? Well, in a perfect world, Rando shows that he is the real deal early on (preferably this year), allowing us to make a package Bassy in a trade while he still has some intrigue attached to him.
The same goes for Bassy. If he shows the C's brass what they want to see out of a PG, we will be able to commit to him fiancially, giving us a PG for years to come and allowing DA to spend his resources on other spots in the line-up.
A worse case scenario is that both show flashes of brilliance surrounded by inconsistantcy, forcing the C's to panic on Telfair and possibly giving him a contract that he isnt worth, and then being hamstrung money-wise if Rondo turns out to be the real deal in his fourth season.
