What's interesting is in one of today's news articles, Kandi says that his agent led him to think that we weren't interested in him (which I think is true), but he found out that wasn't true (huh?), so he fired his agent and worked out a deal on his own. And now he's here.
I think he's just here to give Theo and Perkins a 7 footer to go up against in practice.

I posted a link on Loy's place to see all the pics from Media day. I will post it again here. I always post breaking news throughout the day over on the blog hoping to get more people checking there. Perk made mention of Kandi's hair cut in one of the articles. He looks better this way. sports.yahoo.com/nba/teams/bos/photos

Glad he cut his hair. I thought his hair do was a bit too wild.

If I'm not mistaken he was a guy who had tremendous upside potential right? Does he still have it? Downside? I have a hard time following these things. Well it's nice to have a true 7 footer and true center on the roster.

According to Projo:
Michael Olowokandi is back with Boston. Acquired in the trade that brought Wally Szczerbiak to the Celts, Olowokandi's contract expired at the end of the season. The center worked out with Phoenix, but contacted Boston brass last weekend about coming back to the team; he is here on a non-guaranteed contract. In 16 games with the Celts, he averaged 2.8 points and 2.6 rebounds. Boston begins training camp today with 18 players.
The numbers game probably won't get him a roster spot. He would be in the best case scenario third string behind Perkins and Raliffe. He is here for the practice and possibly auditioning for a job somewhere in the association. However, there have been surprise stories in the past and it would be neat if he could contribute in some Celtics victories.

Let's say Perk goes down tomorrow with a season ending injury. Could we sign Kandi for the year in that case? I'm not sure. In the NFL you can. I would think in bball you can seeing as how you need x amount of guys to play ball, but on the other hand I rarely hear about injury replacements.

If he can't beat out Pittsnogle and Dwayne Jones for the last roster spot, He might as well give up being a basketball player. No excuse for not beating out a couple ndbl players.
He'll be the third string center who only play when both ratliff and Perk are hurt.

You have to look at who labeled him a high potential player. Would Ainge have drafted him that high (he's a former #1 pick)? I highly doubt it. The Clippers thought he was worthy of a gamble. Ainge saw Amare as a high schooler and saw the vast potential in him and if memory serves me correctly, he said that Amare might end up being the best player taken that year. Ainge was right on the mark about his potential, and he is arguably the best player taken in that draft (Yao was #1, Jay Will was 2nd).

If I remember correctly, a lot of people were high on him. He became the scout's darling leading up to that draft. Its just tough to predict how a big guy will turm out. Thats why cant-miss big men(Robinson, Shaq, Duncan, Odem) are worth their weight in gold.

I'm all for the candi man getting a roster spot. Obviously he was humbled after recieving little intrest in the offseason from other teams. I may be looking to far down the line, but in the playoffs you can never have enough big men, especially if you're playing a team like miami with SHAQ. You need as many fouls as possible. Until perk can prove he can stay out of foul trouble, we need experienced reinforcements.

Olowokandi is hard to judge. He's a true 7 footer who has good mobility and long limbs. But he doesn't play hard and he especially doesn't play tough. He can do some nice things on the court when he's confident, but I don't know if he can play at that level for us.
At this time, I'm a lot more interested in a guy who can make an impact off the bench, on the boards and with shot blocking, and this guy is Dwayne Jones. He plays with a lot more energy and tenacity than Olowokandi, and I feel that he can give us 5 - 10 minutes of energy and hustle. Eventually, I see DJ playing a bigger role for us, but he needs more developmental time first.

I agree Derren. I see Jones developing into a very good back up for Perk down the line. Kandi would be a one year fill in and gone. Jones could be a good center for us for years if they take the time to develop him. Jones has a lot going for him and I think he should get that last spot.

Last year, DJ got some playing time down the road and he really impressed me with his hustle. He was often seen fighting for loose balls and following up missed shots. He was able to have some powerful two-handed dunks just by being around the basket when a teammate drove to the hoop. He also hustles on fastbreaks as the trailer, and as I recall one particular play, the ball rolled off the rim and DJ came flying in over two defenders who were waiting for the rebound, and he flushed it home.
And if you remember that crazy one handed jam Gerald Green had against Toronto, DJ was right there trailing the play to clean up the miss.
DJ works really well in an uptempo offense because he's full of hustle and energy, and he doesn't mind doing the dirty work. In baseball, whenever the ball is hit in the infield, its the catcher's job to run down and back up the first basemen, in the event that the throw from infielder is in the dirt or over the first basemen's head. But how many catchers do you see running full sprint to backup the play? Not many. How many big men do you see running full speed to trail a fastbreak and clean up a miss? Not many. But DJ is there hustling whenever he can.
Not sure if Kandi will give us this.
