Here are my thoughts:
I do not see Pierce getting traded from the Celtics any time soon. I see him signing that extension before the season starts. I also see Danny and Paul behind the scenes talking about prospective players on who to acquire. They both know that Pierce's window is closing probably within the next 3-4 years. I expect Danny to at least work extremely hard to attempt to make a move.
Why all of a sudden the new change in philosophy? "Danny- I want to acquire a good, quality veteran". Danny wants to win sooner rather than later. He has said all along as GM that he was acquiring chips, and little by little in the last 2 1/2 - 3 years he has done just that and feels at this point that he can make that blockbuster move to bring in another quality veteran next to Pierce. I just do not see I verson being that final piece.
Even if Paul sees getting Iverson will help them, and it will definitely help them, I do not see bringing him to the team will bring us a championship by himself. It will bring us closer, but if a championship is the real goal, one more piece would need to be added.....a big guy.
The Suns play small ball, but still have a big-time 4/5 with Amare. That's why they never even had a shot to go all the way this year, because they didn't have Amare in the middle. Boris Diaw played great, but is he was NO Amare.
Who made it to the Finals this year? Dallas and Miami.
They had Dirk, who FINALLY started playing down low and becoming an inside presence instead of being a 7 foot jump shooter. Because of that, Dallas finally made the Finals.
Miami had this other guy, you may have heard of him...Shaq.
Who won the last few years? Detroit and San Antonio. Do the names Ben Wallace, Rasheed Wallace, and Tim Duncan ring any bells?
Iverson made it to the Finals one year and got smoked by either LA or San Antonio. I can't remember. At that time, those teams had players like Shaq, Duncan, and D-Rob.
Iverson is a GREAT player, but what this team really needs, whether that comes from a trade or from within. We need a consistent low post threat that will demand doubles down low and be able to bang, rebound and score on the block. A true power forward or true center. Since there aren't any more true centers hardly, a power forward is what this team needs.
I want that to be Big Al, but the recent ankle tweak yet again has me worried that he will never get a chance to show anything because his ankles will be iced up on the sidelines all game long.
I only trade Big Al for another big guy, a quality big guy. Not another guard. Iverson plays with heart, intensity, spirit, perseverance, but he will not help win us a championship all by his lonesome. Small is great for making it far into the playoffs, but not for winning championships. That's why Sactown never won. That's why Phoenix never won, and that is exactly why Chicago has acquired Big Ben, PJ Brown, Tyrus Thomas, and is very interested in Chris Wilcox. You need quality bigs to win, and I am hoping that this Iverson talk is not the final answer to Danny's quest for a title. I have faith in him and wouldn't be surprised if the Iverson deal would be a 3-way trade where he gets shipped elsewhere to the West coast and we come back with a guy like KG, Jermaine O'neal, etc.
I want Big Al to be that guy. Perkins can already be a great center a 10pt 10reb guy, but we need that power forward that can blend with Pierce to get us that ring.
