Absent a trade, I don't see how they could avoid using Gomes at the 4. I do believe he will swing between 3 and 4.
Without a trade or Gomes at the 4, AJ would start sort of b y default, and backup would come from Ratliff (who I figure will spend most of his time backing up Perk) and Sca. Not thrilled with either of those prospects.

IMO, the logic of asking Gomes to slim down and work on his perimeter game is to make him more versatile. Gomes' natural position is at the 4. But he's got borderline quickness, ball handling, and outside shooting to allow him to play some at the 3. But to do that, he would need to improve in those 3 areas.

Agree.
I'm gu essing that the slimming down won't hurt him at the 4. I think the word is that he is quicker, which should give him an advantage against certain 4s.
Improved s hooting from the outside could present a dilemma to the defender.

In any event, Gomes is a real player and if Rivers/Pierce allow the point guards to create and run, finding Gomes on the wing and underneath, he will thrive at whichever position.

Yes, that's the general statement we can all agree on--Gomes is a "basketball player". He just knows what to do and where to be. Darn glad to have him on our team.

Yessir, real basketball instinct. Just like Kedrick Brown.

Yessir, real basketball instinct. Just like Kedrick Brown. LOL I'm sure you are being sarcastic; I'm not sure why, as there couldn't be many, if any similarities in these two players, although if Gomes was asked to sit at the three point line like Brown was, we might not be too happy with him either. That was my caveat with Gerald and his future success. If Doc reverts to his past tendencies (perhaps a reason LaFrentz was traded) and runs the offense for Pierce's isos, clearing the paint and putting the rest of the team on the perimeter, all bets are off. I remember Brown, Johnson and Forte from the summer league the season they were drafted. With Milt Palacio running the show they looked leaden and lost both the first two games. They brought in a real point guard in Khalid El-Amine and the team took off like a rocket. Not only did the three rookies shine in the open court, up tempo game, but 2nd. year player Jerome Moiso got to show off his athletic skills. Unfortunately O'Brien signed Palacio and released El-Amine. The rest is history.
