I think Orien was let go because compared to him&Banks on offense, Rondo
actually brings high IQ/leadership, in halfcourt. He has court vision
that Banks lacked, and playmaking confidence that Orien lost. We'll see
what happens in the summer league.
In the meantime, I watched a tape of the Telfair/Rondo McDonalds HS
game, and here's info on what happened when the new Celtics and 2 other
PG's drafted this year (Jordan Farmar, Daniel Gibson), went head to
head.
Telfair - Preferred to try mostly Rucker park plays, rather than
conservative NBA PG plays. Lots of stutter step change of direction
dribbles, alley oop attempts, and some sweet no-look pickNroll's w/
BigAl. Argued some calls, seemed a bit hyper like Marcus.
Rondo - Poised and smooth, with a demeanor like Delonte/Jason Kidd, the
whole game. Moved without the ball for easy buckets (like Bibby). Had
some low key Stockton passes on the break, and into the post. Can
really run an offense maturely (far more team ballmovement than when
Sebastian was in). Both he and Telfair were great on the break with
early long passes.
Farmar - Played smart and clutch, with tricky layups like Delonte. Will
be good to see him and the Lakers go against our PG's.
Gibson - The only PG to actually try a bunch of jumpshots in the game.
Hit several contested 3's over Telfair. Turned the ball over some when
doubled.
P.S.
During the game the announcers said Rajon's HS coach (who also coached
Marcus Williams) says he's the best PG he's coached since Rod
Strickland. Tubby Smith in a recent article said Rajon is the most
talented/athletic player he's coached in his entire career. I doubt
Rondo will be a bust.
