We got ourselves 2 new PG's so far, and the offseason has only just begun. One of Ainge and River's items on their wishlist is a veteran PG, and it might be possible that they are still going to go after one. (Iverson can play PG, but I hope he's not the veteran they're thinking of). Obviously, Delonte is not the veteran PG they have in mind, or else there would be no need to actively shop for a veteran PG.
It was mentioned in a recent article that Ainge is not really pursuing any free agents, but he has said that the Telfair trade is not the only trade he's looking to make this offseason. We did get a veteran big man to help out our frontcourt (Ratliff), but the veteran PG still hasn't been checked off the wishlist.
So far, the good ones have already been swooped up. Jason Terry is staying put in Dallas, agreeing to re-up with the Mavs. Sam Cassel is also staying put, agreeing to a 2-year deal with the Clips. Speedy Claxton is headed to Atlanta and Bobby Jackson is going to New Orleans.
Could Brevin Knight be a possibility? With Raymond Felton poised to take away Knight's starting spot, BK may be on his way out of Charlotte. He's got 1 year left on his contract that's guaranteed, and after that its just a team option. Maybe the lure of being able to keep his starting spot on a different team will be enough to make him want to leave.
Why Brevin Knight? Well, he's nothing special (and I'm not much of a fan), but he does rack up the assists, keeps the turnovers relatively low, and gets his hands on a lot of steals. These are the things I want Sebastian and Rajon to learn while watching Brevin play. Both Bassy and Rajon are much more athletic and quick, and have much brighter futures than BK ever did. So if they can learn how to do the basic things Brevin does successfully with his limited abilities, and they incorporate their special talents, they can turn into pretty amazing PG's in a couple of years.
So what happens to Delonte? Nothing. I think they intend to make him a backup SG who can act as a combo guard anyways, so his role is going to change, regardless. It may make him expendable, but I doubt it. I do believe Ainge when he says that he loves Delonte, and I don't know of a single Celtics fan who doesn't appreciate Delonte's effort on the court and his sweet outside jumper.
What will it take to grab Brevin? Not quite sure, but it shouldn't be that much. I would like to say Scalabrine and a future 2nd rounder, but it hardly sounds tempting enough for Charlotte to bite. I'm at the point where I happy with every single player on our roster and wouldn't want to give up any of them for Brevin (aside from Scal). They just draftd Adam Morrison, so its not likely they'd be willing to get Wally Szczerbiak from us. If we are going to be trading away a player with significant value, I hope Ainge can wrestle away Emeka Okafor and/or Gerald Wallace from them.
This is just one option to consider. There may be someone else Ainge has in mind, so we'll need to keep our ears open.
