Bob Ryan; "The Commissioner," reigning senior fellow of the NBA Scribe Department of our local newspapers, isn't too pleased with the draft. Is he reverting back to curmudgeonry, or is this a case of "The Kings New Clothes" and he's playing the part of the innocent? Ryan the "Innocent?" I don't think so.-JB

The Boston Globe QUICK SHOTS Assess the Celtics' moves on draft day
July 2, 2006
BOB RYAN Globe columnist One undersized point guard was beaten out by . . . Tony Parker? Chauncey Billups? Jason Kidd? Ah, no. Steve Blake! And he has more personal, troubling baggage than a 747. (His entourage alone will require two sections at the new Gahden). The other undersized point guard cannot shoot, and that includes free throws. His college coach is said to be throwing a party now that he's sure the kid isn't coming back. The veteran shot-blocker they got is 33 and gets hurt about every other day. The guy they officially drafted (Randy Foye) might very well be the next Joe Dumars. Poor draft? I wish. And Allen Iverson is next? Take me now, Lord. Please. Grade: F-minus.

Its hard to assess a draft, unless you assess the draft 5 years later.

Truth is, all he is doing is being realistic, though pessimitically realistic. We are on the opposite end of the table, being optimistically realistic.
Sebastian Telfair could turn out to be a bust--all young, high potential kids can be that. But its not fair to count him out already only after 2 years in miserable Portland. His experience there was like taking your driving test with missing tires. He was a starter for a big chunck of his rookie year, and he began the 2006 season in the starting lineup. But an injury caused him to miss some time, and after that he lost his starting spot. But only because Coach McMillan wanted a veteran running the show to try to correct the sinking ship. He had veteran PG Steve Blake run the show from that point on (though even he could not help get the team to win games).

I think McMillan is an old school coach, and he didn't like the 'flash' Telfair showed. Besides, Telfair lost his confidence and his play deteriorated. I think w/ the Celtics, he will be allowed to roam and his play will definitely improve.

We have seen players go from one team to another and then break out because the system on one team doesn't fit and the other one does. Robert Parish was considered a bust before he came to Boston... Chauncey Billups really didn't blossom until he got to Detroit, the same with Rasheed Wallace. I don't think what happened in Portland is necessarily an indication of what will happen in Boston.

Right. Maybe bringing him back to the east side will get his game going again. Hope he has tough skin, because Doc likes to get on his PG's tails. At any rate, he's being given a second chance to make a good 1st impression.

The coach in Portland is one of the few coaches in the NBA I like less than Doc
