Hey, just think about this for a second!!!! I know this may sound like a far fetched idea, but Ainge's sudden change of heart toward building around our young, potential star players (Gerald and Jefferson), leads me to think that this idea may be a possibility. You know how he seems hellbent towards getting Iverson, even at the expense of Jefferson and Green--the hope of our future dynasty? Why in the world would Ainge be so careless about trading away those 2 guys when they appear to be our future meal tickets? There must be a reason for his sudden change of heart. It just doesn't add up, it seems out of character for Ainge. Why would he have such determination to trade for a 31 year old aging AI when there's obvious character issues (if he's worried about Tony Allen's night life, AI is going to give him a heart attack)? Iverson is not known for his team play, he's a bigger one on one player than Pierce (and Doc has tried so hard to get Pierce away from this mentality), and he'll be trading away the 2 centerpieces of our future dynasty.
We know Ainge is unpredictable, but there often seems to be a reason for his moves if you look beneath the surface. But giving away 2 young future stars for a guy who won't be in the league much longer is looking only at the here and now, and not over the horizon. Everyone knows that our time to win is not now. Even by getting Iverson, we are still missing key pieces, and I don't see us being true contenders. We will sort of look like the Jim O'Brien era Celtics with the Antoine Walker/Paul Pierce show with cameo appearances by Tony Battie, Vitaly Potapenko, Eric Williams, and a few other overachieving spare parts. We won't win with just Pierce and Iverson. Getting rid of Jefferson will smash any hope of an inside scoring game, and along with getting rid of Wally, Gerald and Jefferson, I'm sure we'll also have to include Delonte, Perkins, Rajon, or Telfair.
Ainge has worked hard to accumulate young, athletic talent to build his team around. And he got extremely lucky by landing Gerald and Jefferson through the draft. Why throw it all away for a miniscule window of opportunity to win right now?
Well, I think this is the reason--Lebron James. If we acquire Iverson, we can dangle him and Pierce as big time trading chips. Lebron's contract ends next year and maybe Ainge is trying to do everything he can to get us in position to make a bid for him. No other team can offer the Cavs as much star power as we could by offering PP and AI. The Cavs know they will have to offer Lebron a titanic amount of money just to give him market value, and that will force them to shell out a 1/3 of the team's salary to just one player (exactly the same problem Minnesota faced after giving Garnett his big contract).
Getting Lebron is why Ainge is willing to trade Gerald Green (even as every single Celtics fan screams for Ainge not to do it), because if Lebron comes to town, we have our star wing player (star player is an understatement). That's why Ainge is seemingly and suspiciously blinded about giving away our future to acquire Iverson.
Lebron is a legitimate superstar in the Bird, Magic, and Michael level. He's that great (I don't throw around this word cheaply, but I seriously think Lebron is going to be a great player when his career is over). And he's only 21 years old. If Ainge is going to trade away his team's future, he's going to make sure he gets a worthy player. I don't think a 31 year old Iverson is worth giving away our future for. I DO think Lebron is worth it.
Well, just an idea that popped in my head.
