Hours before the draft the Celtics agreed to trade their No. 7 pick, Raef Lafrentz and Dan Dickau to Portland for Sebastian Telfair, Theo Ratliff and an ‘07 second-rounder
That is the whole deal.
My question is about Ratliff... I am looking at his stats right now and see that he has rarely made it to 82 games for a season.
From 95 till last year, here are his yearly mpg... 75, 76, 82, 50, 57, 50, 81, 32, 63, and 55 ...
I see he has led the league in blocked shots a couple of times. But also found this: Voted Eastern Conference starting center of 2001 All-Star Game, but was unable to play due to injury
Is he injury prone? I don't know that much about him. Is he going to be a good center for us?

I've been on the ratliff bandwagon for a while. He's a defensive presence. I think he also has an expiring contract. At least getting ratliff shows were thinking DEFENSE.

hmm, ratliff was pretty good but he has aged in dog years. anyway his deal is a year shorter than raef's. kind of disappointed though that we didn't wait out to see what happens in the draft

Impfression is that Ratliff has tailed off some.
Kind of surprised at the trade. Thought sure DA would hold on until at least his turn came up in the draft.
DA moved some money. Not sure what he took back in exchange.
is Talfair better than any PG in the draft?

Ratliff is on the books for this year and next year for 11.6 mil and he will be a free agent in 08 so better than Raef's contract.
Danny and Doc are on FSN and is saying that he really likes Telfair and has been looking at him for some time, but they can't say anything about the trade until after the draft.

I see more structure is forming in this trade. Ratliff? Well, we could do worse, but he is a shot blocking presence. Remember that we do have Clifford Ray to help him be a better big man. Plus, Perk is here, and he may be the starter ahead of Ratliff, so this should help him remain healthier.
Does this trade come out equal for both teams financially? I mean, Raef's contract is pretty hefty.

Are we still looking at getting the Blazer's 30th pick?

It didn't mention us getting any picks this year... It said a 2007 2nd rounder was included.

Not like we were looking at Dickau doing a lot for us this year anyways. So looking at this trade, will we do better with Telfair and Ratliff, or Raef and Rudy Gay/Randy Foye (which is probably what the 7th pick would have net us)?

Here is Shira's official notice from the Globe.... She doesn't mention the second round pick that SI did. This trade kind of makes me think that If we do bring in AI, it won't be for Jefferson. Danny got his PG and a back up center but we can't afford to give away another big. I am not sure about Green but I just can't see him giving up on him so quickly knowing his upside. www.boston.com/sports/basketball/celtics/extras/celtics_blog/Draft-day deal for C's By Shira Springer, Globe Staff League sources have confirmed that the Celtics today acquired second-year guard Sebastian Telfair and big man Theo Ratliff from the Portland Trailblazers in exchange for Raef LaFrentz, Dan Dickau, and the seventh pick in tonight's NBA Draft.Telfair, the acclaimed New York high school legend, was the 13th pick overall in the 2004 Draft. In two seasons with the Blazers, he averaged 8.1 points and 3.5 assists per game. Last season he started 30 of the 68 games he played and averaged 9.5 ppg and 3.6 apg. LaFrentz has three more years on a contract that will pay him an average of $11.8 million per season. Meanwhile, Ratliff will make $11.6 million in each of the next two years before becoming a free agent. The numbers are basically a wash over the next two years, but the Celtics get out from under the third year of LaFrentz's deal.LaFrentz, a power forward, averaged 7.8 points and 5.0 rebounds per game last season for the Celtics. He came to Boston from the Dallas Mavericks in the 2003-2004 season. The 6-foot-10 inch Ratliff averaged 4.9 points and 5.1 rebounds per game last year for Portland. He was the 18th pick of the Detroit Pistons in 1995 and led the NBA in blocked shots (3.74 bpg) during the 2000-01 season.

Here's why I think this deal went down. Ainge probably never had the intention to draft Marcus Williams. He's out of the question. He may like Rajon, but not at 7. But he probably really likes Randy Foye and would like to draft him at 7. But the problem is, Kevin McHale likes Foye too, and will take him at 6. Ainge probably tried very hard to get McHale to change his mind, but Kevin may have put his foot down. That's why he didn't come to Boston on monday to watch Foye's workout. He already has Foye pegged as his man at 6. Because of this, Ainge decided to trade for Telfair, whom he feels is a better overall PG for our team over Marcus Williams and Rajon Rondo.

At first blush - I like the deal thoughtfully prepared by Danny Ainge.
We get Telfair who has a chance to be among the best PG's in the future. At least he has court vision and will help the Celtics run. Defensively, we give up size but the Celtics brain trusts feel he has better judgement than Marcus Banks. McMillan gave up on Telfair - probably due to defensive considerations. Jarret Jack became his boy out there in the city of roses.
Dan Dickau was never going to do anything for us, and I doubt he will be a factor in Portland.
Theo Ratliffe is a defense, rebounding, and shotblocking center while Raef is better offensively. I think Boston gained on the physical talent front and they certainly gained financially.
Overall, Boston beat Portland soundly on this deal as they look to get back in the running.
I am disappointed that Patrick O'Bryant will apparently not play for Boston to start his career but we can keep trying to upgrade our big man game in the future.
Also, the Iverson talks are suspended until July 1st. Philly and Boston need a third team involved here.

But we lose Randy Foye, who is possibly an impact player. I feel better about Foye being an impact player than I do about Telfair at this present time.
But Ainge has his reasons, so I'll have to have faith in his decision.

I have faith in Danny, however Telfair is all flash. He didn't get it in Portland. This ain't high school anymore. If he gets it, a one-sided deal.
