Delonte was on WEEI with Dale and Holley today. It was an interesting interview.
He just got in from Jamaica last night from where he was working on something for Basketball without Borders. He had to get up at 4 am to chaperone a group of kids from Harbor school on a trip to Washington for the Assists program and he was doing the interview from Senator Kennedy's office.
He said that he knows what he has to work on to be more productive. He said that he is trying to establish his leadership on the team and that the fact that they are looking for another point guard bothers and offends him and that it also fuels his desire to be the best he can.
He was asked about the workouts for the draft and he said it doesn't have as much to do with ability to play as who can fill a slot better with the organization. He said that the Celtics worked him out and that he knew the Celtics were interested in him before he was drafted. He felt he had a good workout with Boston.
He said that he went home for a week after the season and said it was like when you get out of school and the first week you are happy to be home and then you get watching Maury and stuff and by the second week you are ready to go back to school. He said that he is in competition for the PG spot and he doesn't have time to rest. In July he will be going to Puerto Rico for Basketball Without Borders and he will be putting on two clinics for kids for his foundation.
He was asked how he is trying to establish his leadership on the team and he said he is trying to lead by example. He said that a player leads by example... how he carries himself, his work ethic, morals and values and he is trying to lead that way. He wants to work harder than anybody on the team and try to listen hard to the coaches and be an extension of them on the court.
They asked him if there is a player out there that he is trying to emulate and he said he does it his way. He mentioned that he was in Sen. Kennedy's office and there are president's pictures on the wall and just like each president has to lead differently and do things their way, that he had to do things his way too. That he will lead the way he knows how to. He said that he is humble and doesn't let ego get into it. If Raef or Perk or anyone isn't playing hard, at times he will have to get in their chests and tell them about it.
They asked him about when he started naming his shots and this cracked Dale and Holley up and me too.
He said that nobody names their shots and if the guy who used to name his dunks (Darryl Dawkins) could do it, he should be able to too. He said it comes from doing so many repetitions as he practices shooting that you just know it is going in when you shoot it.
He said that Cookies is where someone is guarding him down low out on the arc and daring him to shoot and he thinks " This is Cookies, I like Cookies"
Cereal is when you have a little man on you and you just need the ball and it is so sweet and just like having a l ittle Cinnamon Toast Crunch on you.
He also said he is working on his right hand and shooting a lot of right handed floaters.
All in all, a good interview.
