It's time to show Paul that you want to win NOW. It's time to use some of that talented youth you've drafted in the past few years (as well as the #7 pick in one of the weakest drafts I've seen in a long time) to get Paul an all-star to play alongside. If you really want Paul to be a Celtic for life, It's time to show him that you want him to win here. Here's some ideas:
1) Jermaine O'Neal
2) Kevin Garnett
Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to find a way to get one of these to players with out having to give up Gerald Green or, of course, Pierce. Once you get one of these guys, go ahead and sign Paul to a 5 year deal worth around 70 million dollars. Trust me, Paul will be the happiest guy on the planet if you get, say, Jermaine AND give him a big contract extension.
Let's make this team's quest for a championship a bit shorter.
Sincerely, VI_CelticsFan@CelticsGreen
P.S. While you're at it, sign Jay Williams to be this teams PG of the present and future.
P.S.S. Once you give Paul his extension, shove it right in Antoine Walker's face.

It is interesting to note that Ainge metioned in the past that there are 3 key elements to build a team: -drafting well -grabbing key free agents -trading for specific needs
Drafting well meant stock piling a lot of good young talent and trading them for a specific need. Well, has that time come for Ainge to move some of our young talent in order to get a specific need? Or does Ainge love all the young guys we have and doesn't want to move them now?
I like the young guys and wouldn't want to see any of them moved.

I agree Derren. I love the core of young players that Danny has brought in. They haven't played long enough to determine the talent level they will attain. Too often in the past we have given up young players before they reached their potential in an attempt to win now. It took roughly 5 years for JOneal to develop into a top tier player. Do we give up an Al Jefferson who is just in his 3rd year and poised to have a break out year this year? Do we give up Perk who is poised to become a dominant center? Do we give up Green who may be as good or better than Tracy McGrady? Do we give up Delonte who may surpass even Chauncy Billups. Do we give away Gomes? Who knows what his ceiling may be given his natural "Bird-like" ability to rebound and his extremely hard work ethic. We don't know what D Jones can do yet and the same goes for Orien Greene. It is just too soon to know what any of these players will be and I don't see Danny giving up on them too quickly We would have to give up a group of those players, not just one. I still don't see Larry or Kevin trading Oneal or Garnett within the conference to a rival unless they get a really, really good deal back which would mean sacrificing our future for a few more games now.
We need to keep going on the track we are on now. Developing these very talented athletic players that Danny has drafted. Bring in a few pieces via free agency or minor trades... Scal or DD anyone??? And let these kids develop here... Don't trade them away so we can see yet another player come into his own on another team after leaving the Celtics due to impatience

I hear you two. I'm in favor of keeping and developing the kids. But here's the thing. Once guys like Green and Jefferson become stars, do you think we can give them big contracts AND pay Pierce big bucks at the same time? Do you really think Gerald and Pierce can coexist at the wing? Do you think Paul will accept a smaller role when Al and G2 develope into all-stars? I think that the answer to those questions may very well be no. That's why I think Danny will go one of two routes this off-season:
1) Trade Paul to a team that can contend (Bulls, Clipps, Mavs are all possibilities) for a young PG (Hinrich, Harris, Livingston) and some other young players/draft picks.
2) Give Paul an extension and package some of the kids with the #7 for a star PF.
I, personally, don't know which option is best for the team (eventhough in my original post I sounded like I want option #2 to happen). I just hope Danny picks the right one.

Yes I do think that we can give Pierce a max contract and also sign the kids when their time is up for renewal. We have two huge contracts (Raef and Wally) coming off the books the same year that Al, Tony and Delonte are up for new contracts. Then the following year, Green is due for his extension. The salary cap will continue to increase and by that time we will be able to offer Green what he is worth as well. I know we will add pieces and subtract pieces along the way but if we keep Raef and Wally for 2 more years, we will have plenty of money to sign our kids.

If we give Pierce an extension, he'll probably be here for another 7 years. In 7 years, Pierce will be 36 yrs old. Retirement age.
Gerald will be 27, Jefferson and Perkins will be 28, Delonte will be 29, Tony and Gomes will be 30. Still young enough to be extending our dynasty after Pierce retires.
I think we are in good hands.
