In thinking about the draft, which has been a pretty much constant task lately, I have been leaning toward Danny picking big in the draft based on the available free agents. It seems it would be easier to pick up a PG who could help as a FA or in trade than it would to pick up a big that way.
Well, what if with the help of Clifford Ray, Danny sees our big men developing quickly and expects them to be enough for us.
Perk will be better. I just know that, in spite of the injury, he will work very hard in the month before training camp and be in shape and learn what he can from Ray. He works so hard, he will improve.
Al is working harder than he has since we drafted him. He is hitting the weight room twice a day and he is working on his conditioning so we won't see him huffing and puffing up and down the court this year. He is working daily with Clifford Ray and I fully expect him to come in and have a break out year and be dominant in the paint.
Dwayne Jones was leading the DLeague in rebounds when we called him up. We didn't get to see much of him last year, but what we did see showed promise. With Clifford Ray working with him over the summer I expect him to be able to come in off the bench and help us.
Raef is in Boston working out with Clifford Ray as well. He has been steady for us but not spectacular. If he is willing to come in over the summer and work with the kids and learn new things, I can see him improving next year and being a good big man for us. It speaks volumes for his work ethic and his attitude that he is there with the kids now and trying to get better. I see Raef as a solid back up at both the PF and C positions and would be solid as Perk's backup and be a leader on that second team.
Gomes surprised a lot of people last year playing PF and showed a knack for rebounding. I suspect he is going to play summer league to possibly get some more experience at the 3. But he will be working with Clifford Ray as well as with Bill Reynolds and will be better next year.
Scal never did seem to fit in last year. For every good thing he would do, 3 more dumb things would follow. But, Scal played well with NJ as a back up and could very well be a solid 11th or 12th man for us if he finally figures out the system and plays a role other than trying to shoot a 3 every time he gets the ball. He will be working with Clifford Ray also and so I expect improvement from Scal as well.
Kandi... then there is Kandi. We could probably sign him to a veteran minimum contract just to serve as insurance. Who knows, maybe Clifford Ray could even help him.
What if Danny sees enough improvement from these guys already to want to stand pat with our bigs right now. In that case, he will go after a PG in the draft and we are back to the
Foye, Sergio, M Williams, Rondo discussion. I am leaning toward Sergio. He has had pro experience in Europe and I think he would be a good fit for us. Foye would be a good choice but he isn't a pure point and along with trying to build Delonte into a PG from a 2 guard, we would have to do the same with Foye. Williams seems like the most ready to come in and help. Rondo has a lot of supporters. But now I am back to thinking Danny may draft a PG.
If as some mocks predict, he takes BPA as in Roy or Morrison, I would say he does so with an eye on a trade of either one of our veteran wings or the player he picks up.
