I believe that Danny will draft a big or a PG depending on which position he feels he can more easily fill with a free agent. We need a player at each spot who can help us and not just fill in.
We need a player who can play both the 4 and the 5 and a pass first point. Let's look at the Free Agents available at both positions and see who Danny might target.
I think we should look at unrestricted free agents. Those who are restricted would more than likely have any offer matched that we could make with the MLE. Here are the available free agents:
Michael Bradley 6'10" 1.5 ppg 2.3 rpg 8 mpg
Kelvin Cato 6'11" 3.6 ppg 2.6 rpg 12.3 mpg
Jarron Collins 6'11" 5.3 ppg 4.2 rpg 21.9 mpg
Al Harrington 6'9" 18.6 ppg 6.9 rpg 36.6 mpg
Ervin Johnson 6'11" .8 ppg 1.3 rpg 4.5mpg
Sean Marks 6'10" 3.2 ppg 1.7 rpg 7.2 mpg
Nazr Mohammed 6'10" 6.2 ppg 5.2 rpg 17.4 mpg
Greg Ostertag 7'2" 2.4 ppg 3.8 rpg 13.5 mpg
Scot Pollard 6'11" 3.8 ppg 4.8 rpg 17.1 mpg
Joel Przybilla 7'11" 6.1 ppg 7.0 rpg 24.9 mpg
Vladimir Rdmanovic 6'10" 9.8 [[g 4.6 rpg 25.6 mpg
Jamal Sampson 6'11" .8 ppg 1.5 rpg 3.3 mpg
Tim Thomas 6'10" 10.3 ppg 4.5 rpg 22.9 mpg
Jake Voskuhl 6'11" 5.3 ppg 3.6 rpg 16 mpg
Ben Wallace... Way out of out price range - max player
Aaron Williams 6'9" 4.6 ppg 3.8 rpg 16.5 mpg
Loren Woods 7'2" 2.3 ppg 4.1 rpg 12.0 mpg
Lorenzen Wright 6'11" 5.8 ppg 5.1 rpg 21.7 mpg
Ok, who from that list would be able to come in and help us. Al Harrington, yes... but he will ask and get more than the MLE. Tim Thomas... same with him. Nazr Mohammed... possibly... Lorenzen Wright... possibly .... Most of the big men are either young and need time to develop or too old to fit well with what we need... or they will demand and get more than we can offer.
Unless Danny can get a steal from above, I think his best bet is to get a big in the draft.
On the other hand, there are several point guards that we could target that would be able to come in and help us.
Sam Cassell... definitely, but after the playoffs, the Clipps will offer him more to stay than we can offer
Jason Terry... Cuban will definitely over pay him to stay in Dallas. No way he wants to leave.
Speedy Claxton Claxton is averaging 12.3 ppg and 4.8 apg in 28.4 mpg... I think he would be a good fit and may sign for the MLE...
Mike James I think Mike will ask for more than the MLE and want a long term contract. Neither of which would fit our needs.
Gary Payton I think Gary will try to sign with Miami for one year or if he gets his ring may just retire.
David Wesley Wesley is a possibility.
Jay Williams Reading several articles about his workouts, I think Jay Will can help us. He has mentioned wanting to go to the Raptors and to NJ but haven't seen anything about his working out for Boston or wanting to come here.
There are several others that I just don't see being any better than what we have now...
Bobby Jackson
Darrell Armstrong
Chucky Atkins too old
Tony Delk too old
Milt Palacio
Jannero Pargo
Rick Brunson
Eddie Gill
Mike Wilks
Howard Eisley
Anthony Carter
Jacque Vaughn
Jiri Welsch (been there, done that)
There are also a couple of players that have been mentioned as being available for trade
Brevin Knight I believe that Brevin can come in and help us.
Sarunas Jasikevicius... I would love to have Saras here. I think he would be perfect for our team. Besides it would be worth the price to hear Tommy trying to pronouce his name every night.
In looking at who is available above I think there is a better chance of getting a veteran PG for the MLE who can come in and help us than there is getting a big. Of course Danny may surprise us all with a trade or another Scal type signing.
I'd be interested in hearing what you all think about it.
