The starting 5 we have next year on paper looks like a pretty competitive bunch.
PG- Delonte
SG- Wally
SF- Pierce
PF- Jefferson
C- Perkins
I'm putting Jefferson in there because I'll be optimistic and say that he beats out Raef and Gomes.
What's noticeable about this starting unit is the chemistry. Delonte, Wally, and Pierce work really well together and they are scorers who don't mind passing up their shot for a better look at the basket (you couldn't say that about Pierce a couple of years ago). Unselfishness starts with your star players and our guys do a good job of sharing the ball. These guys are also smart players. They take good shots.
Delonte has shown immense growth last year and will be a steady PG next season. He already plays like a veteran PG and if he can become a bit more aggressive with his shot, he'll be a guy defenses have to play honestly.
A healthy Wally will be a big boost. His jumper was a bit off last season because of his knee. With a more accurate jumper and more explosiveness off his dribble penetration, he'll be a big scoring weapon to count on.
Pierce is going to be Pierce. A terrific offensive player who can rebound and pass the ball some. Having more offensive weapons beside him will only make him more dangerous. We got to see Pierce at his best this past season--but I wouldn't be surprised if he has an even better season in '07.
Big Al is going to need to work his tail off this summer and come into the season in the best physical condition he's ever been in. Polishing up his footwork in the post and gaining more confidence will cement Jefferson as one of the top young PF's in the league. His scoring in the post will be a difference maker for our team success and will give us a new dimension on offense. Big Al's productivity will directly tie in to how dangerous Pierce becomes next season. If Al is able to do his job in the post, Pierce, Wally, and Delonte will be able to do more damage.
Rebounding is key to our success, and that's why Perkins will be in the starting lineup. He's our strongest player and we will need his mass to clear space inside. Even without giving us any offense, he can have a big niche just by grabbing a bunch of rebounds and re-adjusting shots. He and Big Al can be a formidable rebounding tandem.
Our starting 5 won't compete yet with Billups, Hamilton, Prince, and the Wallace Bros., but I can see them effectively battling many of the second tier teams in the league (Clippers, Cavs, Wiz, Pacers, Nets, etc.).
