Danny has been talking about the need for a PG this summer. We have Delonte, Dickau, and Greene with Tony possibly filling in. I am probably missing a few on each of the lists below. My question is what PG's that will be available would fit our need and not be over priced. Danny said he won't over pay for a player and that will probably leave out quite a few of the prospects below. I think Payton and Cassell are the only pure points listed among the vets. Are any of the veterans listed below as good as say Collins or Rodriguez or Williams? Would it be easier to find a veteran big than to find a veteran PG? I have lots of questions and hope Danny has the answers. What do you guys think? Are we better off taking a PG in the draft and trying to bring in a veteran big or trying to go after a veteran PG and picking up a big in the draft? After watching video of Rodriguez, I think he could come in and play in the NBA right away and be the defensive PG we need. I used to think we should go after a veteran PG but after going over who was available, I started thinking that perhaps we have a better chance of hitting a home run on a PG in the draft with Rodriguez, Collins or Williams, all of which are pure points and play defense. What do you think?
Free agents: Sam Cassell Jason Terry Speedy Claxton Nick Van Exel Bobby Jackson Darrell Armstrong Mike James Gary Payton David Wesley Marcus Banks Chucky Atkins Tony Delk Milt Palacio Jannero Pargo Jeff McInnis Rick Brunson Eddie Gill Mike Wilks Howard Eisley Troy Bell Anthony Carter Jacque Vaughn Jiri Welsch
Possible PG's that may be traded Brevin Knight Jamaal Tinsley Sarunas Jasikevicius Jamal Crawford Nate Robinson Steve Francis Stephon Marbury Baron Davis Monta Ellis Sebastian Telfair Jarret Jack Charlie Bell Chris Duhon Antonio Daniels Devin Harris
Possible PG's in the draft Marcus Williams Mardy Collins Randy Foye Rajon Rondo Sergio Rodriguez? Jordan Farmar?

i think we have to take big if we pick this high in the draft so it leaves us trade or free agency. only free agent i'd like is speedy claxton but he wants to stay in new/orleans/oklahoma. so the trade road is the most possible way to go. possible candidates at this point are baron, any of portland's three (all young though), jasikevicius. the list will change come july though

Go big in the draft.
Trade for either Baron Davis , Brevin Knight, Bassy, or Chris Duhon
None of the free agents are worth it and the ones who I would want on this team will be out of reach (Cassell, Terry, and Claxton).

I'm starting to think that we will go big in the draft as well.
Either McRoberts, (I always go back and forth on who we will select in the draft every day) Shelden Williams, O'Bryant, Splitter, etc.
The only way we select a point guard in the draft is if we trade down. No point guard in the draft is worth #7, maybe Randy Foye, but he is not a true point, something that the article today said would be on our radar.
I do not think we will sign any of the free agent point guards.
Maybe Jeff Mcinnis, really not a big fan though, only mention him because it was rumored last year that Danny had interest in him.
Maybe Jacque Vaughn. He is a poor man's Brevin Knight, but we need Knight more.
Nope. I think that it is more likely that we trade for one of these 3 players listed.
Brevin Knight - we could trade a first round pick to Charlotte and they would probably give up Brevin. Maybe that is too high a price though. Maybe we could trade not our own but either the Lakers or Cavs first rounder next year since they will be good.
Jamaal Tinsley - less likely, just because the Pacers would never trade with us. Tinsley is inconsistent and I think he would want to start and could be a malcontent. Although when he is playing well, the team around him prospers. I always liked him in college.
Baron Davis - This I could actually see happening. Maybe even on draft night. We almost traded for him a year and a half ago for a package including Payton, T Allen, first rounder I believe. He wants out of G State and they want him out I believe.
His stock is as low as ever, and unlike other "star point guards" who will be on the block this summer like Francis and Marbury, he actually has the ability to make his team better when he is healthy. He struggles with his shooting, but on this team with his handles and penetrating skills, fast break passing, he would be dynamite.
We could trade them Tony Allen, Orien Greene, and maybe 2 first rounders.
I wouldn't trade G $ for him though, or Big Al, or even Perk. Draft picks I wouldn't mind, but not more than two.
It would depend on how bad G State would want to trade him.
I also like the idea of getting an experienced big, but it looks as if Danny will continue to develop Perk and Big Al unless the right deal comes along and attain a vet point guard. Maybe it could be the Baron???
Personally Brevin Knight would be the ideal pickup. He could start or come off the bench, probably come off the bench. He is cheap, is as TRUE a point guard as they come and would fit PERFECT with this team and as a veteran leader. I believe he would be a fan favorite in Beantown if the Celts got him. I actually wanted the Celts to get him last year after we let go of Payton.

Hmmm.... I've never been a fan of Brevin Knight (since his days at Stanford). Not sure why. And even though I still don't care much for him, his assist numbers are very nice indeed, as well are as his spg. If you ask me if I wanted him here, I'd bite my tongue and grit my teeth as I slowly give my approval. I'd certainly want Raymond Felton if we could take him instead of Knight.
Baron Davis would be the most impactful PG we could go after by a wide margin. I really enjoy watching him play because his dribbling and moves are crazy, but I think on this team, he'd be too much of a focal point, much like how Antoine Walker was, and this would take away from our team play (as in many players touching the ball and moving it around the court). I would like to get Baron and mold him into a player who compliments what Doc and Ainge are trying to accomplish with the team, and if we can do this, I'm all for it. But to get him in a trade, we're probably going to have to give up a big man and a PG, on top of a star caliber player. Pierce would get it done by himself, but if we keep Pierce, maybe a package of Wally, Perk, and Orien would get it done (though, GS would probably have to throw in another player--which I hope would be Monta Ellis, since I'm positive Chris Mullin would not even think of giving up Ike Diogu). We'd have to give up a player like Perk because they'd want a guy to help shore up their frontcourt. Just throwing out some ideas.
I'm not a fan of Speedy Claxton. Mike James is a volume scorer, and I'm not sure if I'd feel good about our chances of winning a title with Mike James at PG.
Jason Terry would be nice. His scoring ability would be a terrific compliment and he's pretty stable at PG.
Cassel is probably staying put with Elton Brand since they've found good success in Clipper-land (finally!!).
Bobby Jackson is getting old quickly, so I'd stay away. I don't want David Wesley--not a PG.
In the draft, there are some intriquing PG's. I'm leaning towards Daniel Gibson because I feel that he's an Ainge-type player. But I'm a fan of Jordan Farmar (almost as much a fan of his as I was of Kirk Hinrich in his KU days). He's not the most talented PG in the draft, but he's got a lot of positives that I like in a PG. That Sergio Rodriguez kid is a fantastic entertainer, but I don't know much about his game, so I can't really comment. I like Rajon Rondo, but I don't know if he's the type of PG Ainge would want. Randy Foye is a scorer more than a passer.
Interested to see what who we will come out with when preseason rolls around. Its anybody's guess at this moment.

I think Davis, and Pierce are buddies, and I could see it happening. However, I think we would have to stockpile some of our young assets, which would be unloading a combo of Allen, Perks, AJ, Greene, Green, etc. Granted, I think Allen and Greene are "bait" for any trade.

I'm still high on or West/Greene combo. Add a vet in Dickau's place and I'll be fine. Allen might have the D we need, as a sub-PG. ?

I'd still like to see us bring in David Wesly as a back-up PG.

Eric Pincus who covers the Lakers/ Clippers said that he saw Danny in the press room at the Clips/Suns game. Wonder if he is trying to pry Cassell away from the Clips...

or Shawn Marion....
I'd definitely give Sam Cassel full MLE to be the starting PG for couple seasons until D.West beats him out.

Cassell would be nice. I usually don't like scoring PGs, but I will make an exception for Cassell because he is a veteran with playoff experience. He won a championship in Houston! I don't believe this team currently has a player who has a title or who has even been to the finals, so Sam would be nice to have on the team. He can also help Paul with the scoring. If he is willing to leave Los Angeles, then I would be all for bringing him in.
In the draft, I'd rather see us draft a big man rather than a PG, especially if we can sign Cassell. I think Shelden Williams would be a great add to this team. But, if we are able to miraculously get a top 3 pick, I would package that pick along with Big Al or Allen to get an all-star PF. I don't know who that would be, but I know a lot of PFs will be available this off-season.

After watching the Mavs/Spurs series, I'd be reluctant to trade Allen. West can't keep up with those guys. Devin harris is unbelievably quick.

Brevin Knight may be the most likely veteran PG to go after, taking into account the price and service we'll get. Sam Cassel will come at a higher cost because he knows what his value is (took the Clippers from a perennial losing team to the 2nd round of the Western Conference playoffs and nearly beating out the Suns).
The Bobcats are going with Raymond Felton as their future PG, as he really began to show his effectiveness after the second half of last season. This makes Knight expendable for the right price. According to FL12's post, he's not a free agent, meaning we'd have to trade for him. Its getting to the point where I don't want to part with any of the tradeable pieces we have on the team. Right now, it appears that Tony Allen is the only player teams would want. I'm certain that Ainge wouldn't move Pierce, Wally, Jefferson, Gerald, Perkins, or Delonte for a guy like Brevin Knight, and no one would want Scalabrine, Raef, or Dickau. That leaves just Tony Allen, but I'm really fond of him and don't want to see him leave Boston.
