Here is a good Danny Ainge quote on his stance on the whole “trade the young guys for vets” idea:
“That’s an ongoing discussion. At the same time, conceptually that sounds good. Like, let’s go trade some of our youth and get a couple of veterans. But the last thing I’m going to do right now is trade a Joe Johnson for a (Tony) Delk and a Rodney Rogers. I’m not being critical of that move, because it helped them win some games in that season. But I’m not doing that. If there’s a really good player in his mid- to late-20s, then that’s a different story. But I’m not interested in watching Al Jefferson and Delonte West and Gerald Green and Tony Allen become the next Joe Johnson or the next Chauncey Billups. I’m not interested in that happening, so if I do trade one of those young players that we really like, it better bring back a proven and good NBA player that has some time left.”
I guess this really isn’t any new news but it is good to hear from Danny himself that he will not be trading any of our young guys for aging vets but only for relatively young budding star players.
(This is why I love Ainge. He will never make the rash move ala an Isaiah Thomas.)
I have heard some people compare the two because they make so many trades. Danny is NOTHING like Isaiah. Isaiah makes lots of trades and adds maximum salaries and trades away first round draft picks. Danny trades players who don’t fit, sheds salary, acquires first round draft picks, and adds cap space. They are completely opposite.
