Found this post on another board and thought there were some interesting observations from a first hand view at the games.
After a long and grueling extended weekend of Celtics basketball, I had some observations that I noticed I couldn't make from watching the games on television. And here they are:
Game 1: Friday, Nets at Celtics, Section 11 Row 1. Right behind the floor seats.
a. Wyc can work a room: This guy was all over the place. Shmoozing with the front row, reminds me of the Maloof brothers, Cuban in a nice suit. He was about 5 feet from me several times, shaking hands with the haves. He honestly cares, but he is still the kind of guy you want to punch in the face.
b. Gerald is tall....Perkins is not. Gerald is about 1.5 - 2 inches taller than Vince Carter, and he is almost as thick. Now this is not exactly earth shattering news (as Vince is made of paper mache), but I think he is big enough to be an impact player with his body, right now. (although he did not play well) GG can cut without the ball, and often lost Carter in the weeds on V cuts behind the screen. His passing is improving. However, defensively he is too upright, needs to widen his base, and pursue rebound more aggressively.
Nenad was about 3 inches taller than Perk, although Perks arms make up for some of it. Perk is insanely physical. He bumps and bruises, pushes, nudges, and believe it or not, he gets away with some of it. He needs to cut down on this. Nenad is HUGE. He is also crafty, and the Nets have a keeper there. He can hit the jumper and crash the boards, and is only 23.
c. Doc Hates Young Players: Okay, this is an over generalization, but my god does he yell at GG. Gerald may deserve some of this, but countless times during free throws GG heads over to Doc, for an ABSOLUTE tongue lashing. I worry at times about GG's self esteem. Good thing he is a cocky kid. He does the same thing to Orien, which I happened to enjoy.
d. Tony Allen: Is unpredictable as hell. He can make the most amazing crossover, and then dribble over his head. He is as baffling as he is unstoppable at times.
e. Orien: For a pass first PG he misses tons of people on the break in favor of missing his own layups or 5 foot pull ups. His shot mechanics SUCK. He bows his elbow way out to the side, and he shoots on the way down on his jumper. I can't believe nobody has ever had him tuck in that elbow, and release at the apex of his leap.
f. Kandi: Very Large...but largely useless. If he committed himself to the gym this off-season, he could be a 10-15 point scorer. In person, he looks a lot like Pervis outta-service...come to think of it, their careers look alike too.
Game #2: Monday, Cavs at C's Zone 9, row D (decent)
f. Dwayne Jones: He is big (legit 6'10''), but he moves, runs, jumps, and rotates like a smaller guy. He is quick, light on his feet, and looks fluid defensively and running the floor. Has no offensive game to mention, but gets up fast and aggressively for rebounds, often reaching them at the apex of the carom off the rim. No final verdict, but something to watch the next few games.
g. GG: As hard as Doc is on him, Doc still went to him in the clutch on a nice little curl play for the jumper. GG moved very well without the ball this game, however, as Doc has stated that he does not want GG to be a ball stopper, GG looked to pass immediately a lot. GG could not get to the line, and he appeared to get bumped from time to time. GG needs to stay up on himself, at one point he fired his headband in disgust (after a TO), and then did not put it back on for the final few minutes. He is constantly smacking his hands together after missed hosts or TO's.
OG: The jumper was hitting, but still poor mechanics. His game annoys me.
TA: WOW. Unstoppable off the dribble, missed many free throws terribly. He and Gerald talk quite a bit on the court together. (during free throws etc., when GG is not being lambasted by Doc)
