One of the things that Steve Kerr eluded to last night during the TNT broadcast of the game was that the Celtics, now that they have enough young and budding talent, is that they should turn that around and package some of their young talent, as well as maybe a draft pick or two and make a trade for an established veteran to team with Pierce. There are things that I like about this and things that I do not like, but I can almost guarantee that Ainge will be exploring many things this offseason in regards to this.
Obviously, the right deal needs to come along, but this being Ainge’s third year (next year) I think he will look to put the most competitive, "win-now" team on the floor. The veteran that he tries to acquire definitely will not be over-the–hill. Danny has said that much, and I would never expect Danny to trade one of our young stars for a "2-years-left player".
Here are a few of the players that might be included as trade bait according to some of the suggestions going around:
Al Jefferson
Gerald Green
Tony Allen
Scalabrini – throw-in
Dickau – throw-in
Obviously first round picks would be offered as well in any deal to include an established veteran.
Here are some of the names floating around in the suggestions as players that we may be able to acquire:
Jermaine O’Neal
Chris Bosh
Zach Randolph
These are the three main guys that the speculation surrounds .
The only two from that list that I would be really interested in would be Bosh and O’Neal. Toronto supposedly wants to keep Bosh, and I can’t see Indy trading away O’Neal to an Eastern Conference team (ala Artest), even if it is for young talent.
Regardless, any deal involving these players would likely include a package of:
Jefferson, Gerald Green and 2-3 first round picks, which is A LOT.
I, for one, hope Big Al becomes the next Bosh or O’Neal for the Celtics. But Big Al is all about potential, while these other players are already established and if inserted into our lineup would likely make us Eastern Conference Title contenders right now.
Danny has a lot to think about.
What do you all think?
