Rookie Rankings - February 27, 2006
By John Schuhmann
Ryan Gomes is the new Ike Diogu. Back in late December, Diogu had a hot few weeks after missing all of November with an injury and then getting little playing time in his first three weeks on the active roster. It was still relatively early in the season, so Diogu's late December run was enough to earn him a spot in our Top 10 for three weeks.
Gomes has started the last seven games for the Celtics, averaging 12.6 points and 9.3 boards, while shooting .600 from the field as the Celtics have gone 5-2. In his last three games, Gomes has recorded three double-doubles, as many as Channing Frye has all season.
Gomes got his shot earlier this month when both Al Jefferson and Kendrick Perkins went down with injuries. Before that, he had played 21 total minutes in 2006. So can he crack the Top 10 if he continues his current run? It's certainly possible, as Salim Stoudamire seems to be pouting his way out of playing time in Atlanta, but it will be interesting to see what happens with Gomes' PT when Jefferson and Perkins return.
This Week's Rankings
1. Chris Paul (NOK)
21.8 PPG, 3.0 RPG, 7.3 APG, 3.00 SPG, .473 FG% in 4 games
2. Raymond Felton (CHA)
18.3 PPG, 3.7 RPG, 8.0 APG, 1.33 SPG, .449 FG% in 3 games
3. Ryan Gomes (BOS)
14.0 PPG, 10.8 RPG, 1.25 SPG, .583 FG% in 4 games
4. Charlie Villanueva (TOR)
18.5 PPG, 8.5 RPG, .483 FG% in 2 games
5. Channing Frye (NYK)
15.3 PPG, 8.0 RPG, .514 FG% in 3 games
I agree that it will be interesting to see what happens when Al and Perk come back but if Doc doesn't give Gomes big minutes even then, he deserves to be drawn and quartered. Gomes should start with Perk and bring Al and Raef off the bench. Then after a rest Gomes should come back in and give Wally a rest early in the game so that his knee won't be giving out on him late in the game when we need him most. Just my thoughts.... I am sure Doc will see the need to put Scal on the floor at the expense of a player who is clearly superior.
