Just wondering out loud -- if Ime was still our coach, would we be world champions today?
I'm really impressed with Mazzula. Every player gushes about him, his style, his authenticity, his psychopathic ingenuity.
I feel Joe is the right coach for this particular team and where this team currently is in their development.

I actually do. He shot himself in the foot and I'm glad he's gone.

Yes, however that is not taking anything away from Coach Joe. I thought last year, Coach Joe was handicapped by key assistant coaches leaving, and not being replaced until after the season. Back to Udoka, HOU seemed improved though I faintly remembered unbalanced as they had polar opposite home versus away records.

No way to know of course, but I am very happy to have Joe M as coach. I've been reading articles and listening to podcasts with Joe and am really impressed. This guy leaves no stone unturned, studies everything and has what he calls his Mount Rushmore of coaches who he learns from. And these guys are not basketball coaches. I think Joe really is a kind of peak performance genius. I highly recommend listening to his 6/19/24 appearance on the podcast The Lowe Post Show, with Zack Lowe. It's the second one down in the archive here: www.espn.com/espnradio/podcast/archive/_/id/10528553

Part of me wonders if Ime would have been ok with trading Smart. I don't think we win this with Smart on the team.

He uses tactics from the best soccer teams and uses what's successful in other sports to make us better. He makes the guys think outside the box and tries to sharpen them mentally, often talking about being comfortable in uncomfortable situations (like being calm in fight or flight situations). Maybe Ime coaches this team to a title, but I'm super glad it was Mazzula who actually did it. I love that his dad was a Celtics fan growing up, and that he's from Rhode Island and also cheered for the team.

Even some of the stuff Joe does/did that made us scratch our heads, I think maybe he did it not so much with that particular game in mind, but to strengthen us for the long term. Like, for example his not calling timeouts last year (22-23) when it seemed we needed one. I don't want to go too far with this. Maybe he was just learning on the job. But maybe not.
One interesting tidbit from the podcast I linked above is that one of his personal coaches is Josh Waitzkin, the real-life (now grown up) kid from the movie Searching for Bobby Fischer, who went on to be a world champion in push-hands Tai Chi and is now a kind of elite peak performance coach. Good movie by the way.

Funny that Josh's name popped up in the interview and that Joe really appreciates his friendship with him. My kids and I have only recently discovered the movie, 'Searching for Bobby Fischer' because my oldest son has gotten into chess.
And for those who haven't yet heard, Mazzula has been walking around with an injured leg that needs surgery for months now. And he appreciates it because it helps him to focus. What a crazy guy! Gotta love our coach.

I had meant to post something about that actually Derren. Nice post! Ya apparently Joe had torn his meniscus in march and now needs surgery but he didn't want to worry about it until after the playoffs. I like that he could really just be another player on this team and acts like a teammate more than a coach and I don't mean that in like a parent acting like a friend and it backfires in parenting, but moreso that he can vibe with and be relatable and not act like out of touch coaches that were a dime a dozen in the NBA all that way up through the 80s and 90s especially. We've finally entered an era where players coaches seem to actually work when you're not dealing with a major stars ego. Joe is what every player wishes their coach could be. "I gotta have knee surgery, I tore my meniscus in March after we lost to Atlanta," Mazzulla said. "So first thing I gotta do is get back on the mats. I'm going to be out for a little while. I've been working through it since March."

Joe is fortunate as well to have a good cast of players, from the top down, who are hard workers and give no bad attitude. In every aspect, this has been a great team to cheer for!

Yes! Stevens has done a masterful job keeping the culture here going. Really looking like a genius. So much so people ask how the Celtics tricked teams into these trades. The reality is he used charm, finesse, timing, relatability, skill, determination, and hours of time and redrafts. Dash on some luck and the right place right time and he made it all happen. Giving Joe the right tools and pieces consistently, while also the freedom to coach this team in his vision. I think Stevens is likable and he used that in negotiations no doubt. Hey, wouldn't YOU make a deal with Brad Stevens? LMAO!
As you said, a Top-down effort.

It also didn't hurt that Popovich was unloading his good players in an effort to wind up with Wemby.
