A few years down the line, once our young guys are developed and contributing, do you all think this lineup could win banner #17?
C-Perkins PF- Jefferson SF- Wally (or possibly Gerald Green) SG- Pierce PG- Delonte
If Ainge keeps this team together and allows them to gain chemistry and cohesiveness, this team will definitely be playoff bound. But the question is whether or not they'll be able to compete for a title. There's rebounding, outside shooting, inside scoring, toughess, smart IQ players, and players who play with heart. Those are all essential requisites for any team to even be deemed worhty to play for a title. But this lineup also features high FG%, good FT shooters, and players who pass the ball up and not play selfishly.
And then off the bench, we'll have good characters guys like Gomes and Scalabrine, and athletic players like Tony Allen and Orien Greene. Scoring off the bench could use a boost because these guys aren't Ricky Davis types (instant scoring with an aggressive offense). Hopefully Ainge can work on getting us this.
What do you all think? Can this lineup compete for a title in a few years? Or do we need an upgrade somewhere at a particular position?

I think we are really close to the line up that will compete for the title. Right now we have a starting lineup that will be as good any by next year. All we need is for Al and Perk to continue to get more confidence and to get better with more playing time. What we need is more scoring off the bench. When the starters go out it seems that no one wants to shoot the ball and when they do they don't score a lot. Danny needs to get us a scorer off the bench and I think with the team we have we will be very competitive next year and perhaps in a year or 2 finally be able to hang #17 in the rafters. I like the team we have and think it is definitely heading in the right direction. If we could just add some scoring off the bench we will be in good shape.

It is too early to say.
Perkins, Jefferson, Sczerbiak and West will lead the team. I'm pretty sure we keep Allen, Gomes, and Orien Green.
I'm hoping that Pierce and LaFrentz are still around.
Scalabrine and Dickau are handy role players
The Celtics continue to evolve but if we are close, this team will make the playoffs and have a good chance to advance to the 2nd round this May and prove to be the tough lower seed out.

only nr 17 when Perk AND Al hit their full potential. I'm not sure whether Wally will still be around by then. If he still is, he's probably coming of the bench by then, after all, he is already 29.
Don't put to much hope into Allen, O.Green & Gomes, they're role players, no more than that.

I like the core group of players. However, its possible our bench would be: Green or Wally; Allen; and a player TBD. We are going to need 3 solid players coming off the bench.

Well, I do have them listed as bench players.

We should get Will Bynum to give us some scoring off the bench. IMO, he'll be an even better sparkplug scorer than Banks was.

This starting 5 could be championship material if or when:
--Perkins becomes a double digit rebounder, a 2.5 bpg defender, and a solid garbage player (scoring off of missed shots)
--Jefferson harnesses his low post scoring, averages double figures in rebounding, and becomes a solid team and one on one defender
--Wally fills a niche by being a terrific outside scorer who takes some heat off of Jefferson in the post and from Pierce on the opposite side of the court
--Pierce continues to play unselfishly, rebound, and provide solid scoring
--Delonte continues playing like a winner and making magic happen whenever he's on the court. He also needs to find the best ways to get Jefferson, Pierce, and Wally the ball. On top of that, he needs to look for his shot more often so that Jefferson, Pierce, and Wally won't be the only focal points.
I like to have a strong 10 man rotation with all 10 players having specific roles. The 4 players off the bench who I'd think would make us a well rounded contending team would be:
Shelden Williams (acquire him in the upcoming draft) Brian Scalabrine Ryan Gomes Tony Allen Orien Greene
Shelden and Scala will make a terrific backup option at C/PF. They have size, agility, toughness, they can rebound, and do some scoring.
Ryan Gomes will be our backup PF/SF for Doc to use when he wants to create mismatches. He's got terrific feel and touch in the paint, and a real nose for the ball. Tony will be our SF/SG backup option for when Doc wants to go big or small. His athleticism off the bench will be a key in our attack.
Orien is Delonte's backup and he'll also play some with the starting 5 with Delonte sliding over to SG.
**Gerald Green and Will Bynum (whom I hope Ainge will add from the D-League) are question marks. At some point, they'll force Rivers to put them into bigger roles. But for now, I don't know where to put them.

I think there is talent and depth at every position for the future and I still don't think they can win a championship.
I think the chemistry is becoming important now.
Yes I think this can be good in two years
C - Perk/Scala/jones PF - Al/Scala/Raef/Gomes SF Pierce/Gomes SG Szerbiak/Tony Allen PG West/Greene
swing man/sixth man/first off bench G Green
But I think that crowds things up a little, is fairly expensive, and plus we still have a lot of draft picks over the next few years. I want to cash in our chips, and get rid of expensive old guys that never won anything. I'd rather see something a lot more like this
C - Perk/draft pick or FA/Jones PF - Oden/Scala/Gomes/draft pick SF - Adam Morrison/maybe TA or a draft pick/Gomes SG - Green/JJ Reddick/OG PG - West/OG/someone like Duhon or Will Bynum/JJ
It might take 2 or 3 years for that team to get good, but so what. That team could rule the league for a long time. i don't see Gerald Green becoming what he can be with Tony, Pierce, and Szerbiak here for the next 4 years and I don't want to wait that long to see it happen. I think Oden, Morrison, and JJ can be awesome players, as well as Gerald Green.
I guess this what I am trying to make the analogy to
Big Ben Amare Larry Bird Mcgrady/shorter version of Ainge or Szerbiak Dennis Johnson
see what I mean
