Here's what I think will carry over from this trade. Tony Allen will get more playing time, which is totally the way we needed to go anyways. Ricky was playing a ton of minutes and I'm certain that Wally will not be playing 40+ minutes. So this allows Tony to grab some extra minutes. I'm not happy about Ricky leaving, but I want to look at the positives that might come out of this trade. Tony is an even better athlete than Ricky and now he has the chance to develop quicker.
And since Justin Reed is gone, anytime Doc wants to go deep into the bench, Ryan Gomes will get the nod. As FL12 noted in another thread, Ainge made comments on WEEI and said that he likes Gomes.
IMO, Raef was used a lot because of his three point shooting. Now that Wally is here, Raef won't be used as much. I look for Scalabrine to get more burn time now, as he provides more energy and hustle (mobility) than Raef. But not only Scal, but Perk and Jefferson too, will get more playing time.

Something we must keep an eye on is the chemistry between Pierce and Wally. I remember Wally getting into a scuffle with KG a few years ago (as he was starting to live up to his potential) because he wanted to get more plays called for him. He also wanted to be more of The Man, like KG.
Pierce and Wally cannot start getting into an internal battle between themselves, as to who should be taking the big shots. Ricky did defer scoring opportunities to Pierce often, and we have to see if Wally will do the same.

What the trade means:
New Rotation 5-Perkins/Kandi 4-Raef/Al/Scal 3-Wally/Gomes 2-Pierce/Allen 1-Delonte/Orien
I think this means that you will see a lot more of T Allen like DM said. Hope his knee holds up. I think this also means we may even see Gerald $ here toward the end of the season, and by next year he could be getting some decent backup minutes.
Gomes will get a look here. He will take Reeds spot and probably will get even more time than Reed when you take Ricky's 40min/gm out of the rotation. Wally will probably play about 35-37min/gm.
Perk will continue to get the nod at center for the rest of they year. He has the keys to the car and just needs to drive it. Big Al will get more PT (thankfully) and Scal will as well.
I think we will continue to see Raef starting at power forward though. Maybe Doc will experiment at times and start Perk and Al together and bring Raef off the bench all depending on who is hot and and our record at the time.
Other than that, I am not sure. We probably will pick up a 3rd point guard for insurance. Will Bynum? Rick Brunson?

If he wants out, he will get more selfish to prove his point and we get bamboozled into making another bad deal. In fact I think Pierce's days in Boston are numbered, especially if we don't make the playoffs.

I don't think Doc will start both Raef and Wally together. Not enough athleticism or speed. That's a very halfcourt oriented lineup with those two.

Something we must keep an eye on is the chemistry between Pierce and Wally. I totally agree. Pierce and Ricky seemed to work well together and were friends. I am anxious to see what Pierce has to say about this deal. Something tells me he will not be too happy. Hopefully he is mature about it though and he can play on and play well. He had to know a trade was coming considering how poorly the team has played these last months. Hopefully Wally and Pierce can co-exist. I remember that KG thing. Wally needs to humble himself here and realize that Pierce is the man, (much like he had to do with KG)and Pierce must realize that Wally is here to take pressure off of him and be a second scoring option. One thing Wally can do is shoot the rock.

I agree DM, but we are talking about Doc Rivers here. Remember Raef is a vet. He doesn't make mistakes and Big Al makes mistakes because he is a young kid. The kids need to earn their PT. That is the most important thing. Wally is not coming off of the bench. That is for sure.

I totally agree. This summer could make or break Pierce's future with the team. If we end on a bad note, I look for Pierce to ask Ainge to trade him. But if we show promise, Pierce may want to stick around, until the end of his contract.
Unfortunately, I think in order for Pierce to feel good about coming back next year, we'll need to go deep into the playoffs. Just making the playoffs and losing in the 1st round will not be enough, IMO. He just lost a big partner who could score, play with attitude, and in many ways, take the heat off of him. I wouldn't be surprised if Pierce is shaking his head right now.

Not he won't. But Raef might (or should).
With this trade, we now have 14 players:
Perk Raef Al Scala Kandi Pierce Wally Tony Gomes Gerald Delonte Orien Dickau Dwayne Jones
Only 12 can be on the active list and since Dickau is injured for the year, we know he won't be on the active list. Dwayne Jones will be the other one to go on the list. Which means that if Gerald remains on the inactive list while he's in the D-League, we have an open roster. This may be the opportunity for Ainge to sign Will Bynum to a short contract. We only have Delonte and Orien at PG. It only makes sense, IMO.

This trade forces Doc to use a consistent 8-10 man rotation.

If we trade pierce, we better find a way to unload Raef as well...god knows we won't get fair market value for pierce, and Ainge loves getting hosed for slow white players anyway...Pierce is all we really have left from a cpl years ago and he has proven loyal to boston. Al, Perk, and Delonte all look PRETTY good, but unless they improve immensely, we are quickly flushing our team down the toilet and will be nothing better than a new expansion team at this rate.

I think this trade means the opposite, that Pierce is going nowhere. Pierce was quoted in the paper today as saying that this trade seems to mean the team is building around him. In Ainge's interview, the stated purpose of this trade is that Wally compliments Pierce better in that he scores in a different way than Ricky did. Pierce and Ricky in some ways were duplicative of each other, as both like to put the ball on the floor and at times do too much one on one. Wally plays off the ball better, is a more consistent outside shooter, and can create space for Pierce more so than Ricky did. It makes no sense to add on Wally's contract if the plan was to move Pierce for expiring contracts and picks. The reason this trade works is that chemistry wise we were a bad team (as seen by our record) and the veterans we had (Pierce at the 3, Davis at the 2 along with Raef at the 4 and Blount at the 5) did not compliment each other well. Hopefully, we will be a more balanced team on the floor, with more ball movement and less dribbling. Plus we have someone now who can actually hit free throws in the fourth quarter. Except for Dickau, our team as a whole has been horrible in this regard.
