How much do you spend per year?
Last service, got me thinking. Years 1-10, I had maybe 1-2 big ticket $1,500 expenses; years 11-15, I have had 3. The silly part is that I was averaging 16-17k per miles the first 12-years, and only 1.6-1.7k the last 3-years.

I've been so incredibly lucky when it comes to car troubles (knocks on wood). Ive owned a car for nearly 25 years, never once was anything remotely close to new (newest car ive ever owned was 4-5 years old). I've never taken out a transmission, water heater, etc.

I think I spend a few hundred per year on maintenance. I have a 2015 Mazda 3 I think. Manual. My wife also got a Mazda but she got it brand new, so no issues there.I think I have like 80K or 70K miles on it. Owned it for a few years now. Bought it certified pre owned with like 45K miles on it.

My 2007 Mazda3 5 speed standard (bought new) was a gem. Loved that car. Was a blast to drive and never had a single problem with it before the Maine rust killed it prematurely with 130,000 miles on it. Engine still ran perfectly. The only work I had done was routine maintenance (brakes, shocks, battery, tires) and parts that rusted out.
Unfortunately, old cars just keep getting more expensive. Between new tires, required rust repair and a new clutch on the horizon it was going to cost me over $2000 to pass inspection - too much for an almost 13 year old car.

Fresh - Do you have a garage?
Eja - I read somewhere $1,000 is the norm.
Jmost - Most of my repairs where general maintenance, though I passed on one repair which related to the engine, which would have cost me $2000.
Right now, I have 204k miles/15.5 years. Honda Fit.

I've had a garage about 80-90% of my adult life.

I've had a garage about 80-90% of my adult life. Very nice. I bought my condo in 2002. Deck, no garage. If I ever decided to buy another place, will be vice-versa.

One of the few perks of living in North Dakota is a lot of places come with a garage.

My current house is the first time I've ever had a garage. We do our best to keep it from accumulating junk, but it's an ongoing battle.

Fresh - every time I think of N.D., I think all houses come with a wood chipper!
Jmost - you are doing better than my folks; they have a garage which is chalk full of junk including my old hockey equipment from the 80s/90s.
