I think it's only a matter of time, acclimation, experience and grasping the offensive and defensive schemes before we see Luke Kornet emerge as a legitimate weapon off the bench (1st big to sub in).
I missed hearing Brad say last year that they've had an eye on Kornet for a while because of his ability to shoot the three ball, as well as Luke being a solid pick and roll DEFENDER (Brad is right, he is pretty good at it).
But Kornet is also a good passer, a decent lob threat, and a decent shot blocker.
He's got better size than Theis. Which is why I think once he's got the schemes down pat, he'll be the first big off the bench.

I agree Kornet is a candidate to emerge into a Daniel Theis type role. I'm concerned it could take a while, but I think he could have a decent future in this league. We don't have forever to wait, but he seems to have some of the it factor

I'm not looking at Kornet as anything more than a rest-of-season emergency big man. He has some skills, but I'm not sure his body/athleticism is good enough to be a rotation player.

We'll see how much Brad and Udoka like Kornet. If they resign him, I'll go on a limb and say Kornet starts taking away Theis' minutes and eventually makes him expendable, at some point next season.

I don't think he defends or passes at Theis' level, but i do think he could be a solid 'break in case of emergency' big on the bench. dude has a decent stroke, and you can't teach 7'1"

I see what you're saying but this is what I think is the weird thing about Kornet....on paper there are better options out there, but for whatever reason Brad and Udoka decided to go in house (largely). They didn't call Cody Zeller or Willy Cauley Stein. They stayed with Kornet. I have to wonder if there's a reason for that. I think maayyybbbee as NBA vets those guys would get more money and if you're already in the luxury tax it makes it twice as expensive and they just decided it wasn't worth it. But I think it's pretty strange. I think he could definitely be a legit 3rd stringer in this league. Once I read a short article/blurb that said "Why is Cherokee Parks still in the league?" And the answer was every backup in the league has a backup. That's Cherokee Parks. That's sorta where I see Kornet now only he's young. I don't ever feel like he embarrasses himself out there. I always feel like he either makes no difference or is a pleasant surprise, or maybe a relief. He reminds me of Nenad Krstic, if we had been told Nenad was bad, instead of being told he was good. If that had happened AND if he hadn't been acquired for PERK we might have liked Krstic.

Remember, Brad himself said that Kornet's pick and roll defense is good. In our switching defense, the big has to be good at pick and roll defense.
If he checks that, and can hit three's consistently (and he can block a bit too), and he's younger than Theis and a whole lot cheaper, the writing is on the wall.
Kornet is passing the eye test for me -- just needs to get a handle on the defensive schemes.

I don't think Brad would've traded for Theis if he didn't plan on keeping him around. He's still got three years left on his deal too. If he thought that Kornet could provide just as much as Theis he wouldn't have bothered making that trade.

I agree with both of you. I think Kornet is a good prospect, but he's at least a year, if not two or three, from challenging Theis. But I don't think it would be very easy for a young guy to challenge him either. If we drafted a young guy in the late 2nd I think it could be years (if ever) before we see him pass Kornet.

I like Theis, too. I don't mean to say that I'm pushing to cut ties with Theis.
But I like Kornet's versatility. He checks a lot of boxes for me.

I went and watched some video highlights of LK and yeah, he has some skills.
Blocks shots and does so with control - to teammates, not into the third row.
Moves to open spots well.
Shoots without hesitation and well from the arc.
Sees the court well and passes willingly.
My main concern is how well he fits into our switch everything defense. Is he quick enough to do what Al, Rob and Theis can do?

Is he quick enough to do what Al, Rob and Theis can do? Again, Brad had his eye on Kornet a while because, in addition to what you mentioned, he plays pick and roll defense well. Switching on guards, he knows how to play in between the ball hander and the rolling big man. Once the schemes become second nature, Kornet will be in the regular rotation.

Ime, in case emergency, break glass and release Kornet. He can neutralize both Lopez and Portis single handledly.
